Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJAN WILLEM SCHOUTEN March 6, 1924 - November 5, 2011 On November 5, 2011, at the age of 87, Jan fell into eternal rest, shortly after being diagnosed with cancer. He was predeceased by his parents in the Netherlands, his eldest brother Johan and his great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Olivia. His memory will be cherished by his loving wife of 65 years, Geertruida (nee Van Vliet); his sons Neil (Jeanine) and Jan (Sam) and daughter Maria (Glen) Dick; also his grandchildren, Tracey (Graig) Appelbohm, Corrie (Lisa) Schouten, Jan Paul, Krystal and Casey Schouten, and Christopher, Matthew and Alexander Dick; great-grandchildren Garrett and Gavin Appelbohm and Sabrina and Zoe Schouten. Jan was born in Arnhem, Netherlands and immigrated to Canada in 1958 with Geertruida and his sons. He worked with Post, Telegraph and Telephone in the Netherlands for 20 years, bringing his expertise to Manitoba Telephone System where he worked until 1987 and retired as a Pioneer. He took pride in his work and knowledge of the telephone system and upon retirement regretted that his knowledge was no longer utilized. Family was always of the highest priority for Jan and he was always there for them. He invited his mother-in-law to come to Canada and live with them where she remained until she passed. He loved to work on projects around the house and taking care of his one acre property. He cut the grass the day he was admitted to hospital. He loved fishing particularly with his children, playing cards, celebrating family occasions and auto mechanics. The family would like to thank his neighbours, the Parks and the Mains, for all the help they gave him when he was working in the yard in the past few years and Dr. Caners and the staff at Concordia Hospital Emergency and the 3rd floor for their care and consideration for his comfort while in hospital. We love you Dad, Opa, Great Opa! And to my Husband Liefje Ik houd U voor altijd tot dat dag wij zijn weer met elkaar eens A family memorial is being held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Children's Hospital of Winnipeg.
