ALVIN JAMES (JIM) SRIGLEY February 28, 1929 - January 1, 2012 On Sunday, January 1, 2012, our beloved dad Jim passed away at the Riverview Health Centre at the age of 82 years. Remaining to forever cherish dad's memory are his three daughters Terri, Cathy (Carl), and Andrea (Larry); grandsons Joel and Sean; brother, Jerry; sister Sue Gareau; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Ed and Linda Larsen; as well as many wonderful nieces, nephews and cousins. His beloved wife Alice passed away in 2005 after 54 years of marriage. Dad was born in Winnipeg and attended Daniel McIntyre Collegiate. He and Mom raised their family in St. Vital. He was involved in sales throughout his successful career and he worked hard to provide for his family. Dad had a life - long love of music, especially Jazz and Big Band orchestras. He began playing the trumpet and the flugelhorn with the Calvary Temple Band in the 1930s, with his father as the bandleader. He continued to enjoy playing throughout his life. Growing up, we remember many happy times spent as a family at the beach. Dad always attracted a crowd with his intricate sand sculptures. He was a great storyteller. Many people have recently shared stories of how they just enjoyed being around him. Dad was definitely not Mr. Fix It , but after his retirement he found his niche in wood carving. His family and friends treasure the many beautiful creations he gave to us. He also shared his expertise with others, spending many happy hours carving with friends and his grandson. Dad and Mom enjoyed traveling, especially their trips to Mexico, Hawaii and Victoria. Most recently he took his first cruise and went to Alaska, which he loved. Dad had a curiosity about life, which lead him to study a variety of subjects that intrigued him. In his later years, he studied history, religion and genealogy. His interest in our Mom's Scottish and aboriginal roots, resulted in a book he wrote for our family. Dad loved living at Vic Wyatt House where he and Mom moved in 1999. He treasured the many good friends he made there. In recent years he found a dear friend and companion in June Phillips. We would like to thank all of his friends for their kindness to our dad- he truly loved you all. The family will be adding a plaque to our Mom's bench beside the duck pond at St. Vital Park, in Dad's memory. In compliance with Dad's wishes, there will be no formal funeral service. A gathering of friends and family will be held at a later date. Our family would like to express our sincere thanks to the staff at Riverview 3East, for their compassionate care over the last five weeks. In lieu of flowers, if you desire, donations in Jim's memory may be made to the Riverview Health Centre, Palliative Care at 1 Morley Avenue, Winnipeg, MB, R3L 2P4.
