Date of Passing: Jan 29, 2012
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGISELE MARTEL (nee GAULTIER) December 24, 1956 - January, 29, 2012 Peacefully and surrounded by those who loved her, Gisèle Martel passed away on Sunday, January 29, 2012, at the age of 55. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 30 years, Terry, their three children, Nicholas, Renée, Vincent, and grandson Sean. She also leaves to mourn her passing, her mother, Yvonne Gaultier, brothers and sisters: Raymond (Pam), Monique Duval (Doug), Céline Weber (Abby), Michel (Cheri), Eliette Allec (Roger), Marielle Gaultier-Dow (Edward), Guy, Denis (Lourdes), Anne Christianson (Tod), Suzanne (Dan Muruvé), Philippe (Dominique), Amélie (Mo Hykaway). Also left to cherish her memory are her mother-in-law Margaret, brother-in-law Glen, sisters-in-law Cheryl and Debra, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her father, Eugène Gaultier, infant brother Michel, father-in-law Allan Martel and brother-in-law Gary. Gisèle was born in Notre Dame de Lourdes where she also attended elementary and high school. She graduated from the University of Manitoba in 1979 with a Bachelor's Degree in Education and later obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Kelowna. She taught in numerous French Immersion schools in Manitoba, Alberta and British Columbia. She valued her French language and culture. She lived her life passionately and engaged fully in anything that she was involved with. Gisèle was a captivating storyteller, particularly when relating one of her many misadventures. She was sincere, she could not pretend, and was unable to lie. Gisèle was unselfish, lending her support to those she loved. Her husband and children were the foundation of her life. Their hardships were hers and their successes were celebrated. She embraced all that they were and nurtured their hopes and dreams. While Gisèle was uncomfortable when attention was directed on her, her vibrant personality and wonderful sense of fun, naturally drew others to her. She was a dedicated teacher and spoke about her students with love and concern. She took them home in her heart night after night. She is gone too soon and will be sorely missed by all who loved her. We thank the nurses and physicians at the St. Boniface Hospital for the excellent care, especially the staff from the Emergency Room, E6 and the Palliative Care Unit. Thanks also to the staff at CancerCare Manitoba. A celebration of life will be held at Thomson In the Park Funeral Home, on Thursday, February 2, 2012 at 10:00 a.m. Memorial donations may be made to the St. Amant Foundation. THOMSON IN THE PARK 925-1120 Condolences may be sent to www.thomsoninthepark.com

At 20 years old I still remember Mme. Martel. She was my first teacher when I moved to Canada as a child and put in extra effort to catch me up to the French of my classmates in our French immersion school. I was years behind and she used many techniques to figure out how I would learn best. I now am in teachers college and thank amazing teachers like Mme. Martel who put in so much extra effort to help out their students. Condolences to her family and best wishes. - Posted by: Cora Rogers () on: Feb 11, 2012

Madame Martel taught both of our kids Grade 5 (6 yrs ago and 2 yrs ago) and we are forever grateful for that precious gift. She always had a smile and a kind word to offer and will hold a special place in our hearts. We were so sad to hear of her passing but know that she is at peace now and watching over everyone that she loves. She was a very special person and we were so blessed to have her in our lives. Our thoughts and prayers are with you always. Sincerely "The Fouquette Family" - Posted by: Barb, Steve Samantha & Joshua Fouquette () on: Feb 04, 2012

It is with much sadness that we have learned of the passing away of Gisele. Those of us who had the privilege of working with Gisele are touched by her generosity, her constant positive outlook and her joie de vivre.Gisele was a tremendous team member of two staffs who opened Ecole St.Germain and Ecole Julie-Riel. Her contribution as a mentor and master teacher was spontaneous and unconditional.Part of her legacy is that she made us better teachers and thus enriched the teaching profession. To her family and friends we offer you our thoughts, prayers and courage. My heartfelt condolences to Terry and Family and grandson Sean. I was thinking about Gisele a lot this past January and about how wonderful it was to meet with her. A chance wind gust sent her pink scarf flying out of the stroller as she was looking after her grandson and I picked it up. Her tribute is beautiful as Gisele. I recall her always being positive about life. I can only say she will be missed and I will forever remember our great times as we were growing up. I feel blessed to have known her and will never forget her lovely smile as she spoke of her children. Take care. "Madame Martel" as I always called her...taught my son Grade 5 at Ecole Julie Riel (6 years ago). She was like a second mom to Austen...so nurturing and compassionate. She really was the favorite teacher in the school because of her loving ways! When she was diagnosed with cancer, I missed her presence so much while she was away...I kept her in my prayers and was so happy to see her return to teaching. She definitely has left an imprint in my son's life and I will never forget her BIG BRIGHT WELCOMING SMILE. It was so sad to hear of her passing but I hope she can now be at peace and fly with the angels in heaven! My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this very difficult time. Take comfort in all the wonderful memories you have all created together. Sincerely Liz Karchut - Posted by: Liz Karchut () on: Jan 31, 2012

Tu m'as beaucoup touchée. - Posted by: Gisèle DesAutels (collègue à l'université de Saint-Boniface) on: Jan 31, 2012
