GWEN HOGUE (nee TOOTH) On Thursday, February 23, 2012 at the Health Sciences Centre, Winnipeg, Gwen Hogue of Portage la Prairie, beloved wife of Orille Hogue passed away at the age of 83 years. Some of us knew her as Mrs. Hogue, some of us knew her as Gwennie, others called her Auntie. But no matter what we called her, we all loved her. Gwen was born and raised in Oakville, Manitoba with her two brothers Stewart and Arthur. She left Oakville to pursue a career in teaching. She received her training at Normal School in 1948 and 1949, and went on to teach in Elm River, Stony Mountain and Winnipeg. In 1954 she married the love of her life, Orille Hogue and spent 57 wonderful years together. They moved to Winnipeg where Gwen spent 10 more years teaching before moving to Portage la Prairie. Here she taught at Arthur Meighen, Prince Charles and Yellowquill Schools for the next 17 years. Gwen sat on the board of Manitoba Teacher's Society, took up curling and became a Lioness. She loved travelling around the world, with New Zealand being her favourite destination and Kenya (2006) being her most memorable adventure. Gwen was predeceased by her parents, Jack and Sarah Tooth; brother Arthur and sister-in-law Louise, as well as numerous Hogue In/Out-laws. Left to cherish her memory is her husband Orille, brother Stewart, sister-in-law Jean, as well as the afore-mentioned Hogues. Gwen has left a beautiful legacy of giving unconditional love and knowledge to all who knew her. We will always love her. Too-de-loo! Funeral service will be held in Trinity United Church, 15 Tupper Street South, Portage la Prairie, Manitoba on Tuesday, February 28, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. Interment will take place at a late date. Friends may call at the Omega Funeral Home, 83 Royal Road South, Portage la Prairie, Manitoba, for visitation on Monday evening, February 27 from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Should friends so desire, memorial donations may be made in Gwen's name to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, Catherine Newham-Portage Office, 103 Wilkinson Crescent, Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 1A7 or the Central Plains Cancer Care Services, 318 Saskatchewan Ave. E., Portage la Prairie, MB R1N 0K8 or a charity of your choice. • Gwen was my home room teacher in Grade 9 when I made the big step from Poplar Point to Arthur Meighen in the big metropolis of Portage la Prairie. Wow!! 45 years ago! She was a great teacher and she must have had a lot of patience. I recall I was a good student (my opinion Ha Ha), BUT - we boys were always up to something to get on her nerves. RIP Gwen. - Posted by: Dean Smith (former student) on: Feb 28, 2012

  • Condolences to the family. I have wonderful memories of Gwen and Georgina Matiation commuting from PLP to take a School Library Course with me at U of M many years ago. They kept the tone in class lively with their practical questions and comments. Miss you both a lot now. - Posted by: Gerald R. Brown (friend) on: Feb 27, 2012
