Born: Jun 17, 1936
Date of Passing: Apr 05, 2012
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryHANS JOACHIM HENKEL June 17, 1936 - April 5, 2012 Peacefully, on April 5, 2012, with family at his side, Hans Henkel's battle with cancer ended. Hans was predeceased by his parents Wilhelm Henkel in 1974 and Maria Henkel in 2006. He leaves to mourn his loving wife of over 50 years, Elsie (nee Wiebe), his two children Anita (Kevin) Walker and Peter (Nathalie) Henkel; his four grandchildren, Alannah and Lyndon Walker, Lucas and Jacob Henkel, his brother Peter (Sabine) Henkel, and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family. Hans was born on June 17, 1936 in Schwedt, Germany. He came to Canada in 1959 where he met the love of his life. Elsie and Hans were married in 1961. Their children enjoyed a wonderful upbringing in a very loving home. Hans worked hard as a brick layer his entire career. He retired early to help babysit his young grandchildren. Opa spent countless hours playing with and entertaining his precious grandchildren. The living room carpet would often be covered in toys and elaborate Hot Wheels track configurations at the end of many days. Hans also enjoyed teaching each of his grandchildren the finer points of Chess. Hans slowed down considerably in the last 10 years due to Parkinson disease. In December, 2011, he was diagnosed with advanced cancer. The family would like to express their most heartfelt thanks to all the wonderful doctors and staff at Riverview Health Centre (Ward 3 East). We couldn't have asked for better care of our dear Dad. As per Hans' wishes, cremation has taken place and no formal service will occur. If family and friends so desire, donations can be made in his name to the Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.

Hans gave true meaning to the word, "gentleman." We will remember him for all time. Our neighbourhood mourns. Eva Krawchuk - Posted by: E. Krawchuk (Neighbour and Friend) on: Apr 26, 2012

Uncle Hans was such a gentle, funny, magnificent person. I have so many fond memories of him. He had such deep, kind eyes that would pierce your heart as he spoke with me, whether joking lightly or telling me a story. I will miss him terribly. The world was a better place with him in it. He left behind a beautiful family that emulates his beautiful soul, so I feel he will always be here with us. I only take comfort in knowing that he rests peacefully with Oma and Opa Henkel now. I will miss you so much Uncle Hans. You were the perfect Uncle to me. - Posted by: Janine Henkel (Niece) on: Apr 15, 2012
