RALPH DANIEL MCFADYEN 1942 - 2012 Ralph Daniel McFadyen, of Cartwright Manitoba, died with his loving family by his side at Rock Lake Hospital, Crystal City, on May 16, 2012. Born and raised in Eriksdale Manitoba, Ralph leaves to cherish his memory beloved wife Adrienne Leyah; sons Hugh (Jennifer), Ian, Scott (Mary Beth); grandchildren Rachael, James, and Daniel; sister Janet Carruthers (Allan), brothers Keith (Leah) and Barry (Linda); sister-in-law Linda McIntosh (Don); and many much-loved nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother Allan and his parents Mary and Daniel. Ralph dedicated his life to public service through his work with the provincial government and many volunteer activities. He was President of the Assiniboine Memorial Curling Club and Woodhaven Community Club. He was also involved in coaching and supporting the various activities his sons were involved with, always providing a cheerful, fair applaud. In the final days of his life Ralph made the decision to make a final gesture to his community through the donation of his body to scientific research at the University of Manitoba. Ralph died of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis and fought a courageous seven year battle, never complaining and unfailingly cheerful and funny until his death. Our family wants to recognize Dr. Lawrence Homik and nurse Debbie Homik of Winnipeg. Dr. Homik went far beyond the call of duty and we know we had Ralph with us much longer because of Dr. Homik's skills. The family also wishes to thank Dr. Khoury and staff at Rock Lake Hospital for their professional, kind, and compassionate care. Ralph had a wide array of interests and an incredible knowledge of a range of topics. He was best known for his gentle personality and warm sense of humour, always seeing the goodness in others. He was a member of Christ Church Anglican, Cartwright, and the Cartwright Curling and Golf clubs. He immensely enjoyed his annual fishing trips with his friends. He was a gifted draw master, and many of his winter months were spent at the kitchen table working at curling draws which would be both fair and fun. His innovative approach to provincial and national curling draws led the way to the creation of the Page Playoff system now in use at national and international curling championships. An Anglican memorial service will be held in honour of Ralph's life on Tuesday, May 22 at 2 p.m. at Cartwright United Church with The Reverend Father Peter van der Leelie officiating. If desired, gifts in honour of Ralph's life may be made to Christ Church Anglican, c/o Pat Ganske, Box 116, Cartwright, Manitoba, R0K 0L0. Messages of condolence may be made online at www.wheatlandfs.com.

  • We are so saddened that a wonderful guy has passed on. Lloyd's past memories of Ralph are of the many wonderful summers when the Shearer family "borrowed" Ralph for summer holidays on the farm. In later years we did not see so much of them when we were all busy raising our families but the times we shared were great. His quiet way and delightful sense of humour are always to be remembered. Our sympathies to Leyah, his caring wife, Hugh,Ian, Scott and families. We are sorry that his final day came before the much-looked-forward to cousins reunion - Posted by: Lloyd and Marlene Shearer (first cousin) on: May 19, 2012
