Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMAY GUI WONG On Wednesday, May 16, 2012, at Misericordia Place, May Wong passed away peacefully at the age of 86 years. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband George, her six children Jim (Rita), Helen (Rick), Florence (Tom), Fred (Phuong), Anne and Harry (Wendy); her eight grandchildren, Sarah, Jennifer, Erin, Nicolas, Michelle, Eric, Amanda, and Melissa; and her two great-grandchildren; Sophie and Tyson. May was born on March 3, 1926, in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan. Upon the death of her father, May moved to China with her mother and two siblings at a very young age. She spent her childhood and adolescence in China, eventually meeting her husband George through a family relative. After a short courtship, they married on March 12, 1947. In 1952, May, along with her husband and small son, fled Communist China for Hong Kong. Grateful for May's Canadian passport, the family immigrated to Canada with the help of a family uncle to start a new life. May and George briefly stayed in Vancouver before moving east to find work. They had stops along the way in Coronation, Calgary and Prince Albert before finally settling in Winnipeg where they raised their family in a home on Elgin Avenue. It was May's greatest hope that her children and grandchildren would have a better life in Canada, and in this regard she was very successful. May was a talented seamstress and for many years she used these skills as a factory sewing machine operator. On the home front, she found many ways to display her creativity, most notably her sewing, crocheting and cooking. Everyone looked forward to her fabulous Chinese dinners and memories of these occasions will be cherished forever by all. There is no doubt though that she was happiest when surrounded by her family; especially her grandchildren. The family wishes to thank the staff at Misericordia Place and Hospital for their compassionate care. A viewing will take place on Monday, May 21, 2012, between 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Thomson Funeral Home, 669 Broadway. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Tuesday, May 22, 2012, at 2:00 p.m. at Thomson Funeral Home, 669 Broadway. Interment will follow at Brookside Cemetery.
