CHARLOTTE (BABE) FINKELSTEIN Peacefully, surrounded by her grandchildren, Babe died on Friday, May 25, 2012. She is survived by her children Naomi Finkelstein, Sarah Kredentser (David Lowen), David Finkelstein and her grandchildren Rachael, Maia, Kai and Mitchell, as well as her siblings Bertha Kliman, Irving Shnier, Phil Shnier, Max Shnier, Esther Remis and Allie Shnier. Siblings Clifford, George, Norman, Jack and Cecil Shnier predeceased her. After 40 years of being apart, she has been interred in Regina, next to her husband Mitch who died in 1971. Babe was a much loved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, auntie and friend. Her sense of humour, vivacity, generosity, energy, and sweetness will be remembered forever. Born in Melfort, Saskatchewan in 1921, she grew up in Emerson, Manitoba, surrounded by the love of her 11 siblings and her parents, Moishe and Sarah Shnier. She met Mitch in 1940, in Regina while living with her sister Bertha. Their romance withstood the separation necessitated by his medical school training and they were married in 1942. While Mitch was in the army during the Second World War, they wrote to each other almost daily until starting their life together in 1945. Following several years in Weyburn, SK, where Naomi was born, they moved to Regina where Mitch practiced medicine and David and Sarah were born. Babe was very active in the Regina Jewish Community. Several years following Mitch's untimely death at the age of 54, Babe moved to Winnipeg to be closer to her daughters and the Shnier clan. She found renewed purpose in life as a baba - a role she fulfilled to perfection and with great love. Although her last few years were affected by dementia, she always retained a pleasant and appreciative demeanor. Her favorite expression was I'm a lucky lady! She has left us with a legend of wonderful memories and life lessons. Special thanks to Sally, Jehan, Katrina, Jackie and Fey who provided loving care to Mom over the past year.

  • Babe was a friend and neighbour in Halter East while we lived next door to each other. It was a privilege to know her. Those who did know her, loved her. My sincere sympathy to all of her family(s). - Posted by: Verna Johnston (Friend) on: Jun 04, 2012
