SOPHIE (BOOKHALTER) LEVINE December 23, 1918 - June 30, 2012 Sophie Levine passed away on June 30, 2012 at the age of 93. She was born to Paul (Pinyeh) and Zlota Bookhalter (nee Lochshin). After graduating with a B.A. in 1939 she married Louis Levine and they had two children, Naomi and Martin, whom she raised to love books, art and theatre. Sophie worked at the Winnipeg Public Library, was fluent in French and English and occasionally acted as an informal interpreter for the Provincial Court of Manitoba. She and Lou were dedicated to seeing their children become happy adults, succeed personally and professionally, make something of themselves, and contribute back to their communities. Lou and Sophie were in love until he died, in August, 2008. They spent their last years at the Sharon Home and were happy there, where they were tenderly and graciously cared for. Although her memory failed her, she always remembered love, Lou, and her children. Sophie is survived by Naomi (Art Mauro), Martin, her grandson, Bernard, her twin sister, Ethel and her younger sister, Goldie. Sophie had a heart of gold, a world class smile, an ability to draw people to her like a magnet, a keen intellect and a love of her family. Her last years were soft and gentle. We are grateful to the staff at the Sharon Home for their kind and tender care of Sophie. She was sure that she and Lou would be together again and we hope it's so. We will always love her and will miss her and that smile. A service was led by Rabbi Larry Lander on Monday, July 2. Donations in Sophie's memory may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society.

Condolences & Memories (1 entries)

  • Martin, you have come into my mind very frequently recently, and maybe this is why. Please accept my heartfelt condolences. It is a difficult time when one loses one's mother. Cherish the memories and she will never be lost to you. Jennifer - Posted by: Jennifer Ladin (childhood friend of Martin, attended Herzelia Academy together ) on: Sep 30, 2012
