MARVIN ROTHSTEIN November 4, 1949 June 12, 2012 With deep sadness the family announces the sudden passing of Marvin Rothstein at home on June 12, 2012. Left to mourn his loss are his sister and brother-in-law Susan and Gerald Rosenby and their son Stephen. He is also greatly missed by his uncle and aunt Dr. Frank and Janice Kanovsky (Los Angeles), his Aunt Dorothy Kanovsky and their families as well as his numerous cousins who remember him fondly. He was very close with his cousin Carl Wener of Vancouver and enjoyed their late night chats as well as those with his Aunt Janice. He was the loving and devoted son of the late Dr. Abraham and Lucy Rothstein. Marvin grew up in the north end of Winnipeg attending Luxton and St. John's High School. He lived just down the street from his grandparents Charles and Toby Kanovsky with whom he was very close. He excelled in weekly Hebrew lessons with his Zaida and he retained his knowledge of Hebrew for the rest of his life. He always achieved excellent grades in school and was considered by many to be brilliant. His family was very proud to watch him appear on the television show Reach for the Top and he went on to graduate from The University of Manitoba with a Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Physics in 1971. Marvin later developed and thrived in a successful career as an independent financial investor. Marvin always remembered family birthdays and anniversaries and enjoyed joining in their celebrations. Jewish Holiday Dinners were significant occasions to Marvin and he enjoyed spending them with his family as well as The Booke and Devere families. He was particularly proud and happy to attend both his nephew Stephen's Bar Mitzvah and later his graduation dinner from university last fall. He took great pride in selecting thoughtful and unique gifts for his sister and brother-in-law. He also liked to surprise Stephen with special pecklach , exotic beers to enjoy. It was his supreme joy to spend time with Stephen when his parents were away on vacation. There was a lot of good humour, teasing and kibitzing. Stephen was the apple of his eye. Even as they reached their sixties he always thought of Susan as his little sister and liked to offer her advice while they enjoyed sharing many dinners out at restaurants. Marvin enjoyed a glass of fine Scotch, daily visits to Starbucks, old movies, classical music and drives in the country. He was an avid reader of the classics and especially novels by Jeffrey Archer. He had a big heart for his family and is remembered with much love. The family wishes to express our deepest appreciation to Rabbi Lander, Rabbi Green, Bill Weissmann and Dr. Marvin Slutchuk and to our close family and friends for all of their support. Memorial Services were held at Rosh Pina Memorial Park on June 15, 2012. Pallbearers were Larry Booke, Jonathan Buchwald, Jack Katz, Dr. Martin Reinhorn, Stephen Rosenby, Dr. Morel Rubinger, Dr. Alan Schweid and Shimon Segal. Marvin's family would appreciate donations in his memory to The Jewish Child Family Service or charity of your choice.
