Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryPETER DUECK Peter Dueck passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, at Grace General Hospital on August 5, 2012, at the age of 88 years. He was born on February 22, 1924, to Gerhard and Elisabeth (Funk) Dueck in Altbergthal, Manitoba. He is survived by, his wife, Esther and children Robert (Joan), Eldon (Roberta), Janice (Milton) and Ralph (Kiyomi), grandchildren Andrew, Megan and Daniel, brother Jake and sisters Eva and Betty, and numerous in-laws, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, three sisters, four brothers, numerous in-laws, and one son (Allen Randall) in infancy. Peter grew up on a farm near Altona, where he had significant responsibilities as the eldest son of the family. In 1944, he began working at Co-op Vegetable Oils, where he received training as a power engineer. He continued this career with the Department of National Defense in Churchill, Manitoba, then with Manitoba Hydro in Brandon and Selkirk. In Selkirk, he was one of five First Class Power Engineers at the Selkirk Generating Station, responsible for the operation and maintenance of the facility while on shift. Peter enjoyed his 30-year career with Hydro and was well-regarded for his work. At his retirement, he received a number of flattering tributes from co-workers and executives at Hydro and a bit of ribbing about his careful attention to equipment fault reports. Peter also had a long and enjoyable retirement, 25 years in all. He enjoyed golf and cross-country skiing well into his 80's. He also volunteered his time at Bethel Mennonite Church, where he was a member for over 50 years. He loved time with friends and family, often in the background in a large group, but also known for his hearty laugh, a laugh that was sometimes embarrassingly hearty when his children were in their teen years. It was only in the last two years, when various illnesses slowly took their toll, that he was unable to participate in these things. Peter and Esther would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on August 7, 2012, two days after he passed away. The family gratefully acknowledges the WRHA homecare workers and the staff of Grace General Hospital for the high quality of care they gave Peter in his last months. Although there are too many to single out, we are grateful for the efforts of every individual involved. All are invited to the interment service at Glen Lawn Cemetery, 455 Lagimodière Blvd., Winnipeg at 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, August 9, 2012. A memorial service will follow at Bethel Mennonite Church, 465 Stafford Street at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Alzheimer's Society or the Grace Hospital Foundation.

Our strongest memory of Peter is when we went cross-country skiing at Bird's Hill Park. Although he was 20+ years our senior, he (& Esther) could out-ski us by far! Sincere condolences. - Posted by: Ike & Bonnie Derksen () on: Aug 09, 2012
