EDITH ARLIE TESSA FINNEN Peacefully with her husband at her side, Edith passed away at the age of 80 years, at the St. Boniface Hospital in Winnipeg. Left to mourn her passing is husband Roy, stepdaughter Colleen Martens (husband Erwin and their children Liam and Alyssa) and stepdaughter Allison Finnen, sister Doris Line, sister-in-law Lillian Brooks, her good friend Kay Crowston and numerous nieces and nephews. Edith was predeceased by her father Fred, mother Tessa, brother Ron and her brother-in-law Dick Lane. Edith was born on May 20, 1931 in Hartney, MB. At the young age of 10, she moved with her family from Hartney to Winnipeg where she attended John M. King, General Wolfe and Daniel McIntyre schools. She chose nursing as a career and began her nursing education at the School of Nursing at the Winnipeg General Hospital. After graduating Edith was employed at the Women's Center division of the Winnipeg General Hospital. She and her friend spent a summer touring in Europe and then worked in London, ON upon her return to Canada. Being a true westerner, she returned to the Women's Center where she became Head Nurse on the labor and delivery ward. Edith worked for the Victoria Order of Nurses for over 30 years both in the field and as an Administrator at the Winnipeg office. Her experience at VON touched many families and they benefited from her expertise and dedication. Edith possessed a rare ability to handle tools such as the electric drill, power saw and a hammer which produced fine results. She also loved the great outdoors, sports and music. Edith and Roy have many fond memories of camping trips they enjoyed together in their travel trailer. Edith will be sadly missed by all that knew her. A Service of Remembrance will be held on Wednesday, August 22, 2012 at 9:30 a.m. in the Chapel of the Thomson Funeral Home located at 669 Broadway in Winnipeg. In lieu of flowers, friends are asked to donate in Edith's memory to either the Heart and Stroke Foundation, 6 Donald Street, Winnipeg MB R3L 0K6 or the CancerCare Manitoba Foundation, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 9Z9. Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • "Our Miss Brooks!". I worked with Edith for 11 years at the VON and enjoyed knowing her and working with her very much. She never seemed to change - even after retirement and when I'd see her at other retirement parties. She never got any older! She was gentle and had a quiet sense of humor. No one had better "bag technique" than Edith! She'll be fondly remembered and missed. - Posted by: Janet Riddell McCombe (worked with Edith) on: Sep 22, 2012

  • Dear Aunt Doris. I am so sorry that you have lost your sister. Although I really only remember meeting her a few times in my life, I know she was an extremely kind and gentle person. Please extend my sympathies to your children. How good that they had a wonderful celebration in May for Edith's birthday. I don't believe I have ever met Roy but I heard how much he cared for her. My Mom (Verna Henry) told me that they were very well suited and that Edith was so very happy. I will not be able to be at the funeral as I am in Regina. I am very sorry that I will not be there. Please express my condolences to all. Love Dale - Posted by: Dale Goertz (Second Cousin) on: Aug 21, 2012
