(DOUGLAS) D'ARCY SURRETTE
Born: Dec 11, 1922
Date of Passing: Aug 30, 2012
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or Memory(DOUGLAS) D'ARCY SURRETTE It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father and grandfather (Douglas) D'Arcy Surrette on August 30, 2012, at the age of 89, who passed away peacefully with family by his side. Left to mourn his passing are his daughters Dawn (Arnie), Heather, Darlene, Kimberley and son D'arcy (Moira), along with 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. D'Arcy was predeceased by Margaret, his loving wife of 69 years who passed away on June 21, 2012, his mother Margaret Beatrice Surrette, infant son Darrell, and brothers Donald and William. D'Arcy was born in Winnipeg on December 11, 1922. He grew up in Winnipeg and served in the Royal Canadian Navy from 1941 to 1945. After the Navy he started his own taxi cab service called D'Arcy's Taxi. He then continued on delivering milk and bread by horse and buggy until joining Canada Post where he continued his career as a mail carrier in Winnipeg, Manitoba. In 1979 D'Arcy and his wife Margaret moved to Victoria, BC where he worked as a commissioner at the Royal Naval Dockyard until his retirement and resided there until his death. D'Arcy had a big heart and would give the shirt off his back for anyone in need. He was a generous man and was always there to help others. He had beautiful ice blue eyes and a big hearty laugh that could be heard throughout the house especially when he was playing a friendly game of cribbage with his best friend and family members. While raising his family in Winnipeg there was always a house full of family and friends coming and going. Winters were spent playing cards and snowmobiling. In the summer you could always find D'Arcy working in the yard or fixing cars, both of which he loved to do. D'Arcy had an amazing love for all animals and throughout his life was never without dogs and birds. He would always bring home stray or injured animals to care for. His love for animals was passed on to his children. Per D'Arcy's wishes cremation has taken place. Interment of the cremated remains will take place at a later date in Winnipeg, MB. A heartfelt thank you to the compassionate, wonderful, caring staff at The Lodge At Broadmead in Victoria, BC. A special thank you to daughter Heather of Victoria, BC for all the love and care given to D'Arcy (and Margaret) in their final years. If so desired, donations can be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba or to a local animal shelter of your choice in D'Arcy's memory. Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, Love leaves a memory no one can steal. You will forever be in our hearts. We love you dad. You will be missed.

My great grandfather is my idol. He was married for 69 years before he passed away of a broken heart after my great grandmother passed away. He and my great grandmother married when they were around 18 or 19. My grandfather was the perfect man and gentleman. He always treated people and animals the right way. I miss him every day and love him. R.I.P Grampa. - Posted by: Dakota StLaurent (Great Grandson) on: May 19, 2013

Dad You were such a wonderful dad. You were always there for me. I could call you any time day or night and you would be there for me. You did so much for me from building my pantry to fixing my car. You would drop whatever you were doing to be there for me and help me in any way you could. I'm proud to be your daughter and to have had you for my father. You were also like a father to your grandsons Darrell & Kelly and they loved you like a father as well. Me, your grandchildren & great children were blessed to have had you & mom so close to us all these years. You and mom loved Gods country and you loved spending time outside planting trees & flowers, feeding the squirrels & going for drives to the ocean for your favorite fish n chips. We were so lucky and so blessed living so close to each other the last 35 years. You'll never know how much it meant to me after moms passing when you told me you were so happy I was there for you and I made your life worth living. I'll cherish those words and all the memories for the rest of my life. I am so happy to have been there by your side in your final days and hours. I miss you and will love you always. You and mom are together once again. Heather, xox - Posted by: Heather StLaurent (Daughter) on: Dec 14, 2012

Dad, you've moved on from a world where vultures fly & where at times life is not kind to a more peaceful place filled with doves & butterflies. I'm so grateful to have spent quality time with you & mom before her passing & to have been there holding your hand when you left us to be with mom once again. You'll always be remembered for your big heart & kindness for others. No matter what time of day or night if someone needed help you were there for them. You would have given the shirt off your back to anyone in need. You helped others endlessly. You taught me about hockey, how to play cribbage, made & taught me to walk on stilts, taught me to ride a pogo stick, a mini bike & a snowmobile. You also spent many winters making skating rinks in the back yard & helping me with homework. All memories which I will cherish forever. You were always supportive of everyone through bad times, bad choices & bad judgements. You were always giving to others & asked for nothing in return. You were & always will be loved by me & your grandchildren Jeremy, Amanda & Alyssa. As sad as it was to watch you slip away, we can take solace in knowing you're now where you want to be, with mom. Together forever once again. We now have two very special angels to watch over us. The brightest stars in the sky. You are deeply missed. I love you now & always. You will never be forgotten. Rest in Peace in "The Arms of Mary" xox My heart is full of memories, with pride I speak your name. Though life goes on without you, It will never be the same. - Posted by: Kim Surrette (Daughter) on: Sep 29, 2012

Will always have fond memories of my "second parents" and "dad Darcy" yelling down the stairs for us girls to get to sleep and cut the noise. Rest In Peace in each other's arms "Mom and Dad" Linda Piper (Chalus) - Posted by: Linda Piper (Chalus) (Family Friend) on: Sep 11, 2012

I have never met another with the sense of humor that you had grandpa. You never fell short when trying to lighten the mood or make someone laugh. Being able to spend time with you and grandma while you were both feeling well before you passed was a gift for which I will always be grateful. You were loved very much and will live in our memories always. XoXo Amanda - Posted by: Amanda Morin (Granddaughter) on: Sep 10, 2012

I never got to see my grampa very often but when I did I always had memories that would last a lifetime. Whenever I saw him I can say he always made me laugh he definitely had his own kind of sense of humour. Although I love and miss him very much I do find comfort in knowing that he is now back where he belongs and that is with my gramma. I love you grampa. Forever missed but never forgotten.
