OLEG (AL) TOEWS The evening of Wednesday, August 29 Al quietly passed away at Calvary Place Nursing Home in Winnipeg. Al was born in Dnepropetrovsk, Ukraine, November 15, 1933. Al's father decided to move the family to Canada and in 1948 was sponsored by the Heese family of Grunthal, MB, where he worked on the farm and attended school. A year later Al moved to Winnipeg, took English lessons and worked several labor jobs. He attended Tech Voc High School and after completion was approached to work for Manitoba Hydro Electric Board. In 1960, Al married Jayne Zepp and four years later Corinne was added to the Toews family. In 1970, Al was employed by Manitoba Telephone System working in the architectural department. 25 years later, Al retired and took up painting with water colors and ink work. His work was exhibited at the Red River Exhibition where he won first prize two years in a row. Oleg was predeceased by his parents Ludmila and Michael. He is survived by his wife Jayne of 52 years, his daughter Corinne and husband Brian MacMillan of Ajax, Ontario. Family and friends wish to acknowledge the professional and respectful staff caring for Al at Calvary Place Personal Care Home. A service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Monday, September 10 at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue; 204-949-2200 nbardal.mb.ca followed with immediate interment at Brookside Cemetery.
