FERNE READE (STOVEL) ROSE (nee LOUNT) On September 30, 2012, at the age of 91, Ferne passed away peacefully at Riverview Health Centre. Left to cherish Ferne's memory are her son Gordon Stovel (Marylyn) of Burlington, ON; daughter Leslie Sprange (David); daughter-in-law Pat Stovel of Nanimo, BC; grandchildren Gillian Stovel Rivers, Meghan Stovel McKnight (Brent), Lindsay (Marty), Ashleigh (Paul), and Robert Sprange; great-grandchildren Sam and Ben Rivers, and Liam and Owen McKnight; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her first husband Gordon McDiarmid Stovel in 1966; son Robert Lount Stovel in 1973; husband Dr. Jack Rose in 1993; and brother William D. Lount in 1997. On October 31, 1920, Ferne was born to Frank and Annette Lount in Portage la Prairie. The family later moved to Winnipeg where she attended Linwood School, Riverbend School, and the University of Manitoba, while spending summers at Lake of the Woods. As a wife, mother, and Nana, Ferne was devoted to her family, friends, and community. Whether it was playing Bridge with friends, curling, golfing, or cheering on the Blue Bombers, she loved being part of the action and was passionate about enjoying life to the fullest. She loved to travel and try new things, but also cherished time spent with loved ones on the screened porch at Clearwater Bay. Ferne adored cuddling with her Scottish Terriers and took great pride in supporting all of her grandchildren in their endeavours. She will be remembered for her feisty spirit, incredible determination, and infectious laugh. A reception in honour of Ferne Rose will be held at The Wellington, 3161 Grant Ave., from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 9, 2012. Our family extends our sincere appreciation and thanks to Frieda, the staff at The Wellington, Home Instead, and Riverview Health Centre for their dedicated care and compassion. Thank you also to Mum's many special friends, your love and support provided much laughter and joyful memories. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB R3T 0R3, or to the charity of your choice. Wojcik's Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements.

  • Miss you Nana. I think we are alike. Love gigi. - Posted by: Gillian (Granddaughter ) on: Dec 12, 2015

  • Leslie, I remember your mother as a gracious lady who was very kind to your young students in your early teaching days. I was so touched when you and she took time to come visit our cottage at West Hawk, and included me in your wedding ... what lovely honours for a young child, I felt treasured then and, 40 years later, still remember that feeling. How blessed you are to have had her in your lives for so many years. You will miss her greatly but know that all of you are in our hearts and prayers at this time. - Posted by: Jillian (Schmidt) Lamothe (Friend) on: Oct 18, 2012

  • Nana was such a special lady. I so enjoyed all the time I was able to spend with her. Right from the first time we met, we connected. I count myself very fortunate to have known her, and hear many of her stories about her life and family. What a firecracker! Wishing you all peace and comfort in the memories you hold. - Posted by: Lindsay Wenaas (Friend) on: Oct 09, 2012

  • I recall knowing Ferne on numerous family and special occasions, as my brother-in-law's mother. I found her to be a very lovely, warm, and vivacious, lady, full of life and welcoming and greeting all in a genuine manner. She was an excellent conversationalist, always willing to discuss numerous topics and areas of interest, including travel and family. No doubt she was an excellent wife, mother, grandmother, and most recently, great-grandmother. She will be lovingly remembered by all. - Posted by: Curtis Keil (Family friend) on: Oct 08, 2012

  • My thoughts and prayers are with everyone as Auntie Ferne passes to another life. I am blessed to have known her and loved her. I picture Auntie Ferne playing bridge with Nana (Harriett) and Auntie Chick is there too! I share Auntie Ferne's love for the Blue Bombers and always will! I have many happy memories of family events in Winnipeg and will cherish them all. - Posted by: Jeri-Lynn (Stovel) Osayande (Gerry's daughter) on: Oct 06, 2012
