ALLAN POAPST It is with great sadness, that we announce the passing of Allan Poapst of Winnipeg, Manitoba on Sunday, December 2, 2012 at the age of 88 years. He is survived by his three sons and their families; Douglas (Patricia), Jim (Ingrid), and Robert (Joanne). He is also survived by his loving grandchildren; Allan, Greg, Lori (Phil), Robert, Joanna, Josie, James, and Colburne, as well as a fast-growing generation of great-grand-children. He was predeceased by his loving wife and our beloved Mother and Grandmother, Nancy Doreen (nee Barrett). Allan was in demand across the country in the Real Estate business and never missed a chance in his speaking engagements to speak of Nancy with the greatest affection; in his words, she possessed the "qualities" of understanding, compassion, determination and service" that, without which, all of our lives would be poorer. Allan built a sterling reputation in the business world with Stevenson and Company Limited, and also served as the President of the Canadian Real Estate Association, the Manitoba Real Estate Association, and the Appraisal Institute of Canada, among others. The Appraisal Institute's work was something he placed great pride in and there he developed a reputation as "smooth and outgoing, a man of spotless ethics". Allan was appointed to the Canadian delegation to the United Nations Commission on Human Settlements for five years (1983-1987), proudly representing Canada in increasing and improving efforts to solve human settlement problems around the world. Our family knows his impact as a quiet, honourable head of the family. A self-described "intrepid adventurer", he led a life that left him with a story for any occasion. He gave his grandchildren confidence by somehow losing in every card game he ever played against them. Most importantly, he taught us to live with dignity, honour, and love. We shall honour him for the rest of our lives. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of Allan to any charitable cause related to shelter, such as Habitat for Humanity Canada. A funeral service will be held at Thomson "In the Park" Funeral Home, 1291 McGillivray Blvd., Winnipeg, at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, December 7, 2012. THOMSON "IN THE PARK" 925-1120 Condolences may be sent to www.thomsoninthepark.com

  • I had the privilege of working for Allan for a number of years in the 1980/90’s. To say he taught me a lot would be a huge understatement. I always enjoyed listening to his advice and he always talked to you as an equal with the patience to listen to your point of view. He was definitely a guy with a heart of gold.
