Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryLEONA ALICE HRYCIUK December 4, 1926 - December 15, 2012 In a perfect world we would never have to say goodbye to our loved ones. With hearts filled with sadness, we announce the peaceful passing of our much-loved mother Leona Alice Hryciuk on Saturday, December 15, 2012 at the St. Boniface General Hospital. Born in Leduc, Alberta, Leona was the tenth of 11 children born to Katherine and Michael Glubish in a farming community near Calmar, Alberta. Remaining to forever cherish her memory, are her daughter Sandra and son-in-law Geoffrey Tuckwell, granddaughter Marnie (Brendon) Hollier, great-grandsons Lyndon and Ari; son Wade Wayde, grandsons Jonathan and Matthew; sister Rena (Joseph) Melnychuk and many nieces and nephews. Leona's career spanned many years in the dental field. She was employed early on by the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Manitoba and later, until her retirement, by the City of Winnipeg, Community Dental Health Centre. Mother will always be remembered for her elegance, her sweet disposition, her kindness and her devotion to her family, to the Lord and for her deeply felt spiritual beliefs. Mother was part of that generation that shows their love for their family and friends by what comes out of their kitchens. She loved to spend hours baking and cooking. Her biggest frustration was when she was unable to make the big celebratory meals she always excelled at. She also loved to sew and knit and was bestowed with a great talent and an artistic sense in this creative area. Mother read voraciously and greatly loved opera, ballet and classical music. Mother, for many years, was a choir member at St. Lukes Anglican Church and often spoke of the peace and joy that the music and that her dear friends at St. Lukes brought to her soul. Her devotion to the church was unwavering. A celebration of Leona's life will take place at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 20, 2012 at St. Lukes Anglican Church, 120 Nassau Street North. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that a donation be made in Leona's memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 6 Donald Street, Winnipeg, MB or to the music program at St. Lukes Church. Ever has it been that love knows not its own depth until the hour of separation (Kahlil Gibran). Rest in peace, mother, we loved you. Dear Sandra and Wade, How very odd for me to have awoken this morning thinking fondly of your mum! She and my mom, Jo Ramsay, worked at the Faculty of Dentistry together at the University of Manitoba years ago, and remained friends for many years until my own mother's passing in 1997. I visited your mum on River in Wpg., when I went to the old Winnipeg stomping grounds one year. She was so welcoming and lovely, and we enjoyed a special afternoon together reminiscing. I remember her for her affection and friendship towards my own mum, and for the lovely woman that she was. I also remember her for her incredibly beautiful penmanship. Lol I may even still have an old Christmas card and note from her showcasing her artistry. My mom and I always marveled at her handwriting. Our mothers are such very special people, and I know you miss her very much. Our nurture and consolation comes in loving memories. I hope this note finds you well, after all these years. Wade, I believe that you are the Wade Hryciuk whom I knew at G.C.C.,/65-/66 (grade 9). If so, I once phoned your mother several years ago, in my search for you. We had a very pleasant conversation in which she impressed me as being a very sweet and likeable person whom it would have been a privilege to know; NOW I understand from where YOU got it! Being of the generation of MY mother, who passed on several years ago,and knowing how hard my father, daughters & I took it, I very much sympathize with you on her loss. Know that God rewards ALL people who follow His will- SHE certainly sounds to have been one of them. May her memory be as a blessing for all! - Posted by: Moshe (Lawrence) Goldin (School-chum of Wade) on: Nov 08, 2014

Leona was most kind and generous to us on the few visits we had in Winnipeg at her apartment on River Avenue. I remember clearly her holding our newborn daughter (1991), Sidney Anne, in her arms with such love and joy. We loved receiving her annual Christmas letter with her penmanship par excellence for many years. Love to her family.
