MICHAEL PATRICK COX Suddenly, after an extraordinary life, Michael passed away on January 1, 2013. Michael was born in Brighton, England on September 14, 1934. Upon completion of high school, he passed up the opportunity to study at Oxford and followed his passion for food. He enrolled in a three year chef apprentice program in Hove, England and cycled to Basel, Switzerland where he completed his studies. He started his career at the prestigious Stockholm Opera House restaurant making Sweden his home for nine years. Until the travel bug hit again. He accepted a position with Lamco in Liberia, Africa as catering manager in Nimba. It is there that he met and married his beloved wife Ingrid who shared his passion for travel. With Liberia as their home base, they had many adventures in East Africa, South America and the USA. In December 1965, their first daughter, Ursula, was born and five years later they left Liberia and regretfully, their chimpanzee, Jimmy, to return to Sweden. There, Michael and Ingrid owned and operated a grocery store and opened Sweden's first English pub. Their long awaited second child, Josephine, was born in April 1971. The family's stay in Sweden was short lived as Canada beckoned. Michael had accepted a job that would eventually become his calling, namely managing the Manitoba Club in Winnipeg in January 1971. Over the years Michael received offers from various clubs across North America but Winnipeg had become his home. He retired from the Manitoba Club after 28 years of service and celebrated with a trip to Australia and New Zealand. He was a passionate member of the Winnipeg Rotary Club, founding member of the Chaine des Rotisseurs and President of the Canadian Society of Club Managers for two years. Michael always expressed gratitude and praise for the health-care workers who cared for his body and enlivened his spirit. Michael will be lovingly remembered and missed by his wife Ingrid, brother Terry, daughters Ursula and Josephine, grandchildren Alastair and Emma and many lifelong friends. A celebration of his life is planned for Wednesday, January 9, 2013, at 2:00 p.m. at All Saints Anglican Church. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Ingrid and Michael Cox Fund through the Winnipeg Foundation, 1350 One Lombard Place, Winnipeg, MB R3B 0X3, securely online at www.wpgfdn.org or by calling 204-944-9474, 1-877-974-3631.

We only just learned about Michael's passing today. He was the first to welcome us when we moved to a nearby house in 1982 and always enjoyed his friendly smile and chat whenever we met on the street or in the shops. Seems only yesterday Josephine was our WFP "papergirl"! Best regards, Muriel and Sam Aboul-Atta - Posted by: Muriel and Sam Aboul-Atta (neighbours on Riverbend) on: Jan 15, 2013

Ingrid, Ursula, Alastair and Emma, Josephine, my deepest sympathy. Michael and my father were colleagues. Only after my father passing 22 years ago did my friendship with the Cox's blossom. Any return to Winnipeg was not complete without a pool side lunch with Ingrid and Michael reminiscing the antics of Fred Stalder and Michael Cox. On behalf of myself and my family, our thoughts are with you all at this time. Michael was a delightful, intelligent, caring, generous, funny, and loving man/husband/father/grandfather. He will be sadly missed. I will be at his service in spirit this afternoon. - Posted by: Suzanne Stalder (family friend) on: Jan 09, 2013

"My Dear" Michael: he'd call us men "My dear" which with his accent a warmth was acceptable. Likeable & liking, host extraordinaire, we shall miss Michael. Always smiling, with all his bionic parts & pains. Lovely memories. Denzil & June (Ottawa & Winnipeg) - Posted by: Denzil FEINBERG & June WELLS (Friend & Member of Winnipeg Rotary) on: Jan 05, 2013

Josephine and I met in elementary school at Sacre Coeur and were great friends through junior high until I moved away from Winnipeg in grade 10. I have wonderful memories of so many birthday parties, sleepovers, and pool parties at Josephine's home, and especially a super-fun ski trip to Frostfire with her parents. My memories of Jo's father are of a man who always seemed to have a smile on his face. I loved that unlike some of my other friend's parents, Jo's dad was interested in talking to and getting to know her friends - that impressed me as a young person. I always felt so welcome in their home. He was a lovely, lovely man. My thoughts are with Josephine at this sad time, and with her mother Ingrid, and sister Ursula.
