CATHERINE ELIZABETH SHEARER 1930 - 2013 In God's grace and mercy, Catherine passed from this life on Friday, January 4, 2013 in Winnipeg, MB. Catherine leaves grateful hearts and happy memories with her children Mary Lamont Shaver (Terry), Cathie Lamont Makaroff (Doug), Edward Lamont (Paula); grandchildren Dustin Shaver, Christine, Michael and Jonathan Makaroff; great-grandchildren London and Mason Shaver, and their mother Melanie Shaver. She is also remembered with love by her sisters Lee Powell and Roberta McCannell, and many nieces, nephews and in-laws. She was predeceased by her brother Donald Shearer, sister Anne Shearer Wright and by her husband Charlie Lamont. Catherine was a devoted mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, daughter and friend. She was a friend and champion of the deaf and hard-of-hearing community, a dedicated teacher, and committed environmentalist. This amazing woman was an adventurer throughout her life. She loved exploring places and cultures, and travelled the world from a young age until it was simply no longer possible for her. Catherine started her own business in her mid-fifties, and went on to produce books and a full curriculum for speech-reading and the hard of hearing. She was passionate about many things and loved children, her church, books, singing, being in nature, gardening, and cottage time at Brereton Lake. She swam and walked daily, usually with one in a long succession of decrepit but much-loved dogs. Catherine had a wicked sense of humour, and often laughed until she cried, much to her family's delight. She was always looking out for the underdog and was open-hearted and hospitable to all. Catherine managed the depression-era trick of being remarkably frugal and extremely generous at the same time. Deepest gratitude to all those who loved Catherine and visited, wrote and supported her to the end. Special thanks to the amazing staff at Misericordia Health Centre and Misericordia Place. A celebration of Catherine's journey on this earth will be held on Saturday, January 12, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. in Westminster Church, 745 Westminster Avenue. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the wonderful work that Westminster Church does in the community; donations to Westminster Church, R3G 1A5. Wojcik's Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements.

Condolences & Memories (12 entries)

  • Being so far away from Winnipeg, it was hard to keep in contact with Auntie Catherine but I have some wonderful memories of her, the cottage and the amazing houses that she had. - Posted by: Patty Serré ((Niece)) on: Jan 15, 2013

  • My deepest condolences to Mary,Cathy and Edward.I hope Catherine is in a better place.Your mother was a kind, intelligent, caring and pragmatic woman and I have many fond memories of growing up with her and your family. It was a close neighborhood and if anyone needed a sympathetic ear Catherine was there. - Posted by: Lorraine O'Leary (Family friend/Neighbour) on: Jan 12, 2013

  • I also met Catherine as a student in her hard of hearing class at the Manitoba Deaf Center on Pembina. It was a momentous time for me, I needed so much her positive attitude, her lessons on speech reading, her coping skills and her humorous outlook in regards to sudden adult hearing loss. There was no one in that field as qualified as Catherine. We became friends and were also able to continue our 'coffee dates' when both of us moved to Victoria. Just this week while on Bank St. wonderful Catherine came to mind. How fortunate for me that she will always be part of my life! - Posted by: Arlene Staniul (Student and friend) on: Jan 10, 2013

  • Catherine was so sweet and welcomed us when we moved to the house next to her. She was a caring and considerate person and we will never forget her. Our condolences to the family. - Posted by: Yudai Family (neighbor/friend) on: Jan 10, 2013

  • Catherine was my speech reading teacher almost 23 yrs. ago when I first attended speech reading at the Deaf Centre on Pembina. I still have Catherine's books. But through attending these series of workshops reconnected with a high school friend, who also coincidentally connected with many friends from former Mulvey school (for the deaf). This group of 9 hard of hearing women got together after the class for coffee most every week. I'm happy to say that through the years we have all stayed connected and still meet for get togethers every month or two. Catherine was a wonderful teacher who taught us all a great deal. A huge help to those of us that needed her guidance and knowledge. - Posted by: Marnie Houston (Student) on: Jan 09, 2013

  • My condolences to the family. She will be missed by all of us. - Posted by: JoJo (nurse) on: Jan 09, 2013

  • My condolences to Catherine's family over her passing. I remember Catherine fondly when I had the opportunity to replace her in her position with the Manitoba Deaf Seniors Center while she was away on medical leave. I learned much about the hard of hearing from Catherine and enjoyed the fire that burned in her for all issues 'hard of hearing' and 'deaf'. I had the opportunity once to visit her at her Brereton Lake cabin... something I would never forget. I arrived refreshed and ready to explore the cabin and the area, only to sit on the Laura Ashley fabric couch and feel every bit of tension draw from me to the point that I couldn't keep my eyes open at all! I promptly fell asleep 2 minutes after sitting on that couch. No wonder the cabin was Catherine's beloved escape! I will remember her fondly. - Posted by: Tim Evans (Summer replacement coordinator for the Manitoba Deaf Seniors Association) on: Jan 09, 2013

  • I never met Catherine but have benefited greatly by taking the Living With Hearing Loss program offered at SMD based on her curriculum. She has touched many, many lives and opened many doors for the hard of hearing. - Posted by: Catherine Cooke () on: Jan 09, 2013

  • My Auntie Catherine was a strong, intelligent, caring lady that always had a genuine interest in others. I loved my chats with her and I learned many things from our special times together. She enlightened me about the hard of hearing community and I had many educational chats with her which have helped me in my own business today! She always took such interest in our endeavors and was always genuinely interested in those around us. I am thankful for the sister and amazing friend she was to my mother, and know that she is and always will be missed. I am grateful to have known her and had her as such an inspirational part of my life! - Posted by: Sandy Joseph (Niece) on: Jan 09, 2013

  • Catherine was a remarkable woman who always supported and defended marginalized people and believed in a barrier-free world for all. Her kind heart and devotion to all will definitely be missed, especially by the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community. Love Rick, Kyra, and Cody - Posted by: Rick Zimmer (Friend) on: Jan 09, 2013
