JAN F. STROSKI Jan F. Stroski passed away peacefully on January 14, 2013 at the age of 93 years. Jan is survived by his wife Janina, daughter Lucy, son Mark, grandsons, family and friends. Jan was born in Stryj, Poland. After he completed his studies at the Gimnazium in Poland he volunteered to serve in the Navy in 1938. A month after war action near Gdynia, Hel and defence at Westerplatte he was taken prisoner by the Germans and was taken to Stalag II.C near Szczecin, where he was also used for work on the German farm. In 1945 he was released by the American forces and taken to the English sector in Rotenburg. After five years of living in various emigration camps, in June 1948 he left for Canada and arrived in Halifax and from there continued to Winnipeg and employment on a farm. After completion of work contract on the farm, and having brought his wife Jadwiga from Germany, he remained in Winnipeg and joined the Polish Veteran Organization "S.P.K." (Polish Combatants Association), Branch No. 13, and the Royal Canadian Legion, "A. Mynarski V. C." all at 1364 Main Street. For his social work of many years he was decorated: Bronze Medal, Silver Medal and Gold Medal. He received a Silver Decoration from the S.P.K. for his social activities. Also, after many years, he received a Cross for "September Campaign in 1939". Jan was employed by Eatons and they were kept busy looking after their two children - Lucy his daughter and Mark his son. After his wife Jadwiga passed away, and after 10 years as a widower, he married Janina Sawicka (a widow) with whom he shared his advanced years until this moment. Special thanks are due to his family doctor, Jerry Pawlak and Cardiologist Dr. Ducas for their kindness and support. Over the last two years he resided at Maples Personal Care Home and Jan received very good care. Special thanks to Dr. Patel for his kindness and support and to the staff for their very good care. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Polish Invalids Fund for Veterans of the Second World War at SPK-Club 13, 1364 Main St., Winnipeg, MB R2W 3T8. Jan will be greatly missed by his wife Janina; children Lucy and Mark, also grandchildren Nicholas, Dylan and Kevin; sister-in-law Ada and Chris, family and friends. We love you very much. A memorial service will be held at the Holy Ghost Parish Church, 341 Selkirk Ave., Winnipeg. Mass will be celebrated on Friday, January 18, 2013 at 10:00 a.m., viewing will be held prior to the mass at 9:30 a.m.
