EVELYN GLADYS JAMES Professionally known as Maxine Were February 8, 1924- February 25, 2013 Peacefully on February 25, 2013 at Grace Hospital, Evelyn James passed away. She is survived by her son Charles Howard James Jr., grandson Jerome, Justin, Johnathan and Jeffrey and many nieces and nephews. Evelyn was born in Drumheller, Alberta and grew up in Vancouver. She started her singing career with Benny Carter, toured the US from Portland, Maine to Portland, Oregon, from New York to New Orleans. While there Maxine sang on the same bill with Nat "King Cole" and Lena Horne at the Apollo theatre. She became ill and returned to Canada. While sitting in with Lionel Hampton and was discovered by Monte Hall and began a nightclub, radio and television career which lasted several decades. She was known for her sultry voice and clear dictum. Maxine was a regular on the Jack Duffy show and was considered one of the top ten Canadian divas of all time. As her health foiled in later years, she took great pleasure in the successes of her grandsons and their musical careers in Hawaii. Cremation has taken place and as Maxine wished there will be no formal service. If desired a donation may be made to the charity of your choice.

  • Sorry to hear that Maxine has Died. I worked with her as a technician on many programs in the 40's at the MTS station CKY in Winnipeg and on several CBC programs and also enjoyed her work at the Hollow Mug. She had a great voice and was a joy to work with. I have met her several times over the years and enjoyed our conversations.   • Oh what memories! I recall listening to Maxine here on the radio when I was a child,and following her career here locally in Winnipeg. I met her in person at the Hollow Mug at the International Inn. What a gracious person she was.
