GLADYS SOKOLOFF
Date of Passing: Apr 10, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGLADYS SOKOLOFF It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Gladys Sokoloff. Gladys passed away in Winnipeg on Wednesday, April 10, 2013, at the age of 89 years. She is survived by her children Laurence, Edward (Sandra) and Iris (Douglas); grandchildren Eli and Micah; as well as numerous relatives and dear friends. Gladys was predeceased by her parents, Goldie and Albert Forscher; sister Selma who died in childhood; and also by Ben Sokoloff. Gladys grew up in Philadelphia and attended a prestigious girl's school for which she was the class valedictorian. At a young age, she developed strong interest in both the arts and sports. Gladys was an accomplished pianist, but was as comfortable at the opera as at a basketball game. She attended many of the latter enthusiastically with her father. As a young adult, Gladys took great pleasure in attending Broadway shows in New York and had the good fortune to see a number of classic theater performances. She married Ben Sokoloff in 1947 and they and their children lived in a number of university towns in the Midwest USA. The family moved to Winnipeg in 1966. Gladys eventually returned to the workforce at a large law firm, beginning as a legal temp and rising quickly to office manager. She remained in this position until her retirement. During retirement, she continued to be involved in her many diverse interests, adding French and travel to her pursuits. One of Gladys' greatest joys was her two grandchildren. She was a devoted grandmother and took great pride and interest in them. Gladys' keen intellect, wit and interests in the world will be greatly missed. Even while in the hospital in her last week, she was asking family about the results of the college basketball playoffs! A memorial service will be held in May in Winnipeg. An announcement will follow. We want to thank her dear friends Janet and David, Doris and Doreen for their ongoing love and support. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be sent to a charity of your choice. Wojcik's Funeral Home & Crematorium 2157 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg www.wojciksfuneralchapel.com 204-897-4665

Dear Iris, Doug, Eli and Micah, I am thinking of you now and hoping you are filled with fond memories, along with the sorrow of your loss. You have all certainly helped me through my journey with my parents, and I want to express at this time how important that has been to me. Although I have never had the pleasure of meeting Gladys, I am glad to hear how much she enjoyed the performing arts. I am sure that she is very proud of her grandsons. You have my deepest condolences. Martha - Posted by: Martha Waldon (Friend) on: Apr 21, 2013

As friends of Iris and Doug, we too have had the the wonderful opportunity to get together with Gladys when she was in Toronto, happily visiting with her family. Each time we met with Gladys, she always greeted us with such warmth, smiles and questions regarding how we were doing. In all of our conversations, Gladys also always enjoyed talking proudly about her kids and grandchildren, who, so obviously, she adored. We are so sorry to hear about your mom / mother-in-law /grandmother's death, Iris, Doug, Eli and Micah and know that, although she is gone, she will be with all of you forever. - Posted by: Eve-Lynn Stein and Allen Flaming (friends) on: Apr 17, 2013

As friends of Iris & Doug, Ken and I had the opportunity to spend time with Gladys when she was visiting in Toronto for family occasions. I will remember her as an engaging conversationalist who was incredibly proud of her children and grandchildren. Our thoughts are with you as you mourn her passing, and in time, celebrate her life and legacy. Love, Martin & Ken - Posted by: Martin Frith & Ken Mah () on: Apr 15, 2013

The last time I saw Gladys was here in Toronto at Iris' 50th birthday party. It was held at Lyndsay and David's home on a beautiful spring day. As I made motions to begin leaving, Gladys said she would walk me out and have a smoke. We sat outside and chatted; mostly about how wonderful Iris was (still is). Gladys lit her cigarette and in her delightful voice chided herself for the habit. She asked me to remind her how Iris and I met, which I did. We then moved onto age and how I was 9 years older than Iris. Her eyebrows shot upwards and she said, "No, you're not!" I smiled with delight waving her hand in dismissal. I hugged her as she did me. I said she was wonderful and I left. She was wonderful - smart, funny, warm, loving, engaging and so caring. Despite the geographical and contact distance I will miss her. Gladys was a memorable and well-liked Office Manager at AM&T. She was always ready to listen to the complaints and problems of the legal secretaries who worked there and with her sense of humour and practical advice smoothed our day-to-day working path. Rest in peace Gladys. - Posted by: Darlene Bellinger () on: Apr 13, 2013
