THELMA MCDERMID (nee ASHBY) Peacefully, after a lengthy illness; it is with deep regret that we announce the passing of Thelma Lorraine McDermid of Winnipeg, MB, on Thursday, April 18, 2013 at 87 years of age. Thelma is survived by her brother, Gordon (Bea) and her three sons, Dale (Janice), Doug (Cheri), and Al (Brenda); grandchildren, Sean (Meagan), Lee (Samantha), Stewart, Jenni, Sarah Kelly (Nicholas), Michael (Laura), David, James; two great-grandchildren, Quinn and Nate; along with extended family Sandi (Rob), Devon, Cameron, and Jaron; as well as numerous nieces; nephews; relatives; and friends. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Don McDermid. Mum and Dad attended Principal Sparling School and Daniel McIntyre Collegiate together. Upon Dad's return from the Second World War, they were married and raised their sons in Winnipeg. Mum was committed to Dad and loved him deeply. She was proud of her many accomplishments. Before marrying she worked for the Great West Life Insurance Company operating one of the first early-stage computers. Later in life she worked for Eaton's and was proud to be the floor manager of the housewares department at the St. Vital store from which she retired at age 65. Thelma was loyal to her employers her entire life and her family all had significant amounts of the store merchandise to prove it. Throughout the years, Mum was a Girl Guide Leader, a sorority executive member, a community volunteer, a voracious reader, an animal lover, and the best coffee cake maker of all time. She loved to drive the various cars she owned and favoured the speed of 60 kilometers per hour whether she was on the highway or in the driveway. Mum was a force to be reckoned with on any given day. She held her beliefs tightly and seldom gave in on any issue or challenge. Her strength defined her and she truly was a fighter in all aspects of her life. But at her core, Mum loved her family more than anything. Her grandchildren were flawless in her eyes and she shelled out scotch mints to them in quantity as soon as their parents weren't looking. Her sons and patient daughters-in-law also enjoyed her unwavering support. A gathering is being planned at a later date, following her Interment. Our family wishes to extend our heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Dakota House for their kindness that they extended to Mum. In her final months, Mum resided at Vista Park Lodge and received care from a thoughtful and compassionate group of professionals. For this we are truly grateful. Donations in Thelma's memory may be made to the Stroke Recovery Association of Manitoba, CancerCare Manitoba, or the charity of your choice.
