RICCARDO DE THOMASIS March 8, 1979 - April 25, 2013 It is with deepest sorrow and heartache that we announce the passing of Riccardo De Thomasis. After a courageous three year battle with cancer Riccardo passed away at St. Boniface Hospital on Thursday, April 25, 2013 with his loved ones at his bedside. Riccardo will be forever loved and his memory cherished by his parents: Salvatore and Lidia; his siblings: Clarita (Rae), Annalisa, Mauro (Amira), Silvana (Gene), Fabrizia (Ed), Roberto, Sabrina, and Enrico; nephews: Zachary, Alesandro, Caleb, Adrian, Jaedan, and nieces: Katiana and Ella. He will also be lovingly remembered by Bianca and his long time friends. Riccardo's life passion was soccer. His love for the game began when he started playing in the Fort Garry community at the young age of six. His game developed as a teenager and by early adulthood he became a provincial elite player. Riccardo played primarily with Winnipeg's Ital-Inter Soccer Club while managing and running indoor soccer programs at the soccer spectrum, as well as the Calcetto summer soccer league. Riccardo devoted his career to coaching child, youth, and adult soccer for 17 years. His business, The Winnipeg Indoor Mini Soccer League was his pride and joy. Riccardo will forever hold a special place in the hearts of everyone he touched. Adored by many, he was an inspiration, a role model, a vibrant hero and he is now our guardian angel. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, April 30, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, 255 Stafford Street, Winnipeg, MB. A private family interment will immediately follow at Green Acres Cemetery. A reception will then follow from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Immanuel Pentecostal Church Hall, 955 Wilkes Ave. Many special thanks to the doctors, nurses, and Palliative Care staff at St. Boniface Hospital for their attentive care and support over the last few months. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Riccardo's name to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9. I met Riccardo thru soccer almost 15 years ago. Although we never hung out day to day we definitely spent a lot of time at the soccer spectrum. When my sister's team needed help, it was Riccardo that we turned to for assistance and coaching. My first impression of Riccardo was that he was so mysterious. He always spoke in a low controlled tone, his facial expression was generally the same and I used to laugh with him about how he never seemed to get excited over much.....EXCEPT when it came to playing a soccer game or coaching a team. He was a big part of our family and will be greatly missed by all of us. "May God keep your soul and give peace & solace to all of those who mourn your passing. Really gonna miss you Riccardo. The world lost an amazing individual but your legacy will last for a forever" - Posted by: Roberta Kellow (Friend) on: May 05, 2013

It is hard to believe that Ricardo, this vibrant, generous and kind man, is gone and that, far too soon. As a student, he was a quiet leader and always a gentleman. May God keep his soul and give peace and solace to all those who mourn his loss. - Posted by: Ken Neil (Teacher) on: May 02, 2013

A shining example in his family and community. Riccardo was obviously loved and spread much love to the lives he touched. Rest peacefully. - Posted by: Sean (Friend of Enrico) on: Apr 30, 2013

As a former player and team manager in the Soccer Spectrum, I shared many moments with Riccardo, on and off the 'artificial turf'. I was always impressed with his calm and professional demeanour at such a young age. His warm smile and relaxed approach contrasted with his passion for the game. Soccer didn't define him but he certainly defined soccer during his time at the Spectrum. My former teammates will agree and will be missed. Please accept our condolences. - Posted by: Dan Hunter (Manager/Player - All Blacks Soccer Team) on: Apr 30, 2013

Riccardo and I met when I was just a little boy running around the field at the soccer spectrum. As I grew in age I attended his camps and tournaments and began to learn the game from him. We kept in touch over the years and when I was old enough, Ric started calling me up for Men's league games for Ital-Inter. When I was finally old enough to sign it was a no brainer. Playing with Ric was an opportunity I wouldn't pass up. Through the years of soccer and going out as a team and bonding we grew closer as friends. I started helping him out with Calcetto and his mini camps and realized that Ric truly was Mr Soccer. His knowledge of the game was only surpassed by his passion for it. Not only was Ric a great leader and teacher he always kept everything in perspective. He always was there to talk to about my problems and there to celebrate my successes. Ric taught me so much about soccer but more so about life. Although he lost the battle against cancer the way he fought it was inspiring. He somehow always kept positive and through our visits at the hospital always was more inquisitive of my life rather than talking about his. Riccardo I can't thank you enough for everything you did for me and I will always remember you as my mentor, team mate and above all friend. Rest in peace. - Posted by: Danny Kustra (Friend) on: Apr 29, 2013

Riccardo was an incredible young man who mentored all of my kids in the game of soccer. He was a great friend to my son Raf who learned the love of soccer through Riccardo's incredible skill and passion for the game. Words cannot express how precious he was to my family. He was the older brother Raf never had and a teacher to many young children. He will be forever missed by our family. I know he is walking with God now and pain free. May God bless and keep him in his tender loving care. - Posted by: Judy Richichi (Friend of Riccardo) on: Apr 29, 2013

I met Riccardo at soccer spectrum. He came up to me to talk to me about my boys. He always tried to help the boys in by moving them up or taking them on soccer trips. He always talked to them like a big brother. He was the nicest guy you could ever meet. Always had a smile on his face. We had a lot of chats the two of us about family and life. He meant a lot to all of us. We will deeply miss him. Our hearts go out to all of the family. You have suffered a great loss... Rest in Peace Riccardo - Posted by: Sharon Tummillo (friend of Riccardo) on: Apr 29, 2013

I just wanted to take the time to wish the family well through this hard time. From my family we will keep you in our prayers. I just wanted to take the time to let the family know how much we appreciated his work with the Mini Soccer at the Univeristy of Manitoba. He was a great coach, patient, calm and was evident how much he truly loved the game. Through his trials of health he still committed to show up and oversee how things were going. I always like the way he would be attentive to my son when he would ask questions, and how excited he was to see Coach Riccardo. Forever Coach Riccardo was a big part of giving my son something to be proud of when he plays soccer. Thank you to his family as well. Sincerely Jason Parenteau and family - Posted by: Jason Parenteau (Indoor Mini Soccer Participant) on: Apr 29, 2013

I started Kindergarten with Riccardo at St. Maurice school. In the 3rd grade, Riccardo had amazing handwriting. I was not able to hand write my letter G's to the teacher's liking. I would pass my paper to Riccardo whenever a capital G was needed, and he always, always made one for me. Even at that young age, he was incredibly kind. I remember recess in the school yard and him always organising the soccer games, which he took very seriously. My thoughts and prayers are with all his family and close friends. Please know that Riccardo is remembered fondly by so many. - Posted by: Joanne Campbell (School Friend) on: Apr 29, 2013
