PATRICK SHOENUT With great sadness we announce the passing of Patrick on Saturday, April 27, 2013. To paraphrase a favorite author, "he died of a long word of the heart". Left to cherish Patrick's memory are his loving wife Beth, daughter Meredith (Kevin Swibaker), and granddaughter Muirenn; Michigan family: mother Beatrice Daniel, sisters Marianne (Marcus Helms), Diane (David Rodriquez) and Lynn Shoenut Yaney; brothers Tim (Nancy) and Tony Daniel (Karen); and many friends and relatives across Canada and the United States. He was predeceased by brother Christopher and father Bob Daniel of Riverview, Michigan and his grandparents Ernie and Francis LaCroix, and Bernard and Zelpha Daniel. In the 1990s, Patrick established a laboratory to study esophageal motility and pH in various surgical and medical conditions. He worked with such diligence that he earned for himself the reputation of becoming an international authority on the subject, having published over 50 peer-reviewed papers in medical science journals. In recent years, Patrick's work in northern Manitoba schools touched many lives and, in return, gave him joy and numerous adventures. A family gathering will be held at a later date to celebrate Patrick's life. Patrick was a scientist, an educator, enthusiast of nature and wildlife, passionate and funny and a great raconteur. He enjoyed books, hunting and fishing. He loved his home by the Red and the return of wood ducks in the spring. We're so glad he was present at the start of another homecoming. Messages of condolences may be left online at www.wojciksfuneralchapel.com.

  • We're so thankful to have gotten to know this man. He truly inspired us to push forward in our education. He is the reason why I'm passionate about science. He was such a hilarious man, we'll always remember how fortunate we are to have met you. We've looked for you countless times. Now that I've finally found you, it's too late. We hope you'll be there at our wedding in spirit. That's one of the reasons we've been searching for you, and because we missed you. It's nice to finally see your face again, even though it's on the Internet. The Split Lake students you've taught will always remember you. <3 Thank You For Everything. - Posted by: Kelly and Colton () on: Nov 15, 2014

  • Patrick was very instrumental in assisting to diagnoSe me to have a swallowing disorder when I was a young man some 30 years ago. Because of Patrick I understood my illness and have been able to live with it still to this day. Thank you. You have left your mark on this plain of existence. You knew your calling. That in itself is a gift. - Posted by: Gary Slipec () on: Jun 26, 2013

  • Patrick will be remembered by us for his real sense of humor. He had a way of lightening things up. He was the king of easy going guy you could just sit and talk with. He was so full of information. He was easily the life of the party. Patrick will be so missed. Our thoughts & prayers are with you Beth. • I know that through Patrick's efforts and determination he personally changed the lives of three of his students by gaining them access and funding to the Deep River Science Academy in Ontario. A very prestigious science academy that only a handful of students are chosen out of the thousands that apply. Two of these three students have continued on to post secondary education, in large part to Patrick's teachings. Patrick always believed in challenging his students and having them work towards their academic potential. He is still spoken of with fondness by the staff and community of Split Lake. Many were saddened by the news of his passing when informed. I will miss my friend, and yours. He was an unforgettable man, that I was lucky enough to cross paths with for a far too brief a period of time. - Posted by: Blake Symons () on: May 10, 2013

  • Pat use to tell me so many funny stories about his unusual life experiences. I particularly liked his stories about his high school teaching experiences in Northern communities. He also saw humor in so many life experiences (through his sometimes cynical - but accurate - perspective). Before a punch line, he would sometimes lean in, pause and have this wry smile. He was a great story teller. - Posted by: Joseph Polimeni () on: May 10, 2013

  • As a friend of Carol and Bill Beitzel I had the opportunity to chat with Pat at Nick’s house where we were all invited. It was also the day I got to know Pat more as a scientist and as a friendly person. The pleasant afternoon ended with singing. As we held our glasses together he sang me a line of the Eucharistic Prayer he said he liked of his Latin era: "Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi, dona nobis pacem". May Lord the Almighty grant him now the everlasting peace he longed for. Tokoure - Posted by: Tokoure Assoumatine (Friend) on: May 05, 2013

  • Patrick enjoyed nature and shared his knowledge and experience with all his neighbours. Our wood ducks are a constant reminder of his presence. He will be missed. - Posted by: The Beitzels (friends) on: May 04, 2013
