MARY FETTERLY (nee KORNIK) Mary Kornik entered this life on January 7, 1924, on Ukrainian Christmas, and peacefully, on Saturday, June 29, 2013 left us to meet her Lord and Saviour. She will be sorely missed by her seven children Gordon, Harvey (Janet), June Giesbrecht (Ken), Grace Nelson (Roger), Lois Kowalski (Gerald), Elden (Sarah), and, Joy Kulik (Jan); 14 grandchildren: Jason, Alan (Orysa); Trevor Wiebe, Roy (Tammy), Mary Grace, Chelsea Nelson, Diana Phelan (Greg), Tina, Erik Kowalski, Steven, Melanie, Joel (Tamara), Janina, and Julie Kulik; five great-grandchildren Daniel, Peter Nelson, Kadin Phelan, Maelle, Esme Kulik; sister, Nellie Smud; twin brothers, Mike and Walter (Ann) Kornik; and many family and friends. Mary was predeceased by Carl Fetterly; parents Safron and Caroline Kornik (nee Kutcher); daughter Agnes; brother Mel; sister Olga Pasternak (Mike) and Paul Smud; and son-in-law Larry Wiebe. Mary overcame a lot of challenges in her life, the first when she started school having to learn English as a second language. As the eldest, she had to leave home at 14 years of age to help support her family. Then when raising her own family, her dream of becoming a Registered Nurse required that she pass each year of schooling starting at Grade 9 and achieving her High School Diploma before she could be enrolled at Red River College. Mary graduated with her Nursing Diploma in 1975 at the age of 51. Her nursing career for the Federal Government took her to many locations and as far north as Oxford House, Manitoba. While struggling to provide for her family, Mary became the first woman in Manitoba and the fourth woman in Canada to be awarded independent Property Rights. She worked with the Status of Women for the 50/50 Financial Support Rule. Always active in church, school, and community affairs, Mary taught by example many life skills. She modeled generosity, integrity, honesty, dedication, perseverance, and hard work. She loved to learn and encouraged others to pursue their dreams. On Wednesday, July 3, 2013, Mary's Funeral Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. in the Headingley Community Centre, 5353 Portage Avenue, Headingley. For those who wish, viewing will be held prior to the service. Interment will follow in Holy Trinity Anglican Cemetery, Bresaylor Road, Headingley. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to all the homecare, first responders and healthcare professionals who provided her with love and care. In lieu of flowers, open up to someone in need. Matthew 25:35-36 (NIV) "For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me."

Condolences & Memories (20 entries)

  • Auntie Mary, you were a character and one heck of a woman and you were well loved by us all. You were and will forever continue to be an inspiration. Strong, brave and an all around good soul, you will be missed. - Posted by: Sharon Fetterly (Grand-Niece of Carl Fetterly) on: Apr 01, 2014

  • I always enjoyed your Mom's visits to Stony Mountain...thru aunt Betty Ozuk, your Mom found out that I lived in Stony Mtn and stopped in one day and became a regular visitor a couple times each summer for about 7 -10 years...I know my late husband, Tom and Mary always had lengthy conversations or "debates" as they called them. I am sorry I was unable to attend the funeral as I was having some minor surgery done. - Posted by: Jane Bell (nee Kornik) (Granddaughter of Joseph & Hafia Kornik(Riverton MB )) on: Jul 10, 2013

  • Hearing of Mary's passing brought a flood of fond remembrances; one of the first, in the late '70s, was a friends & family corn & potato roast down by the riverside. Mary made "fruit of the Spirit" investments in relationships, & I am glad she was my friend. My heartfelt thoughts & prayers go out to the Fetterly clan. - Posted by: Bob Caverly (Family Friend) on: Jul 07, 2013

  • I appreciated your mom's sincerity, work ethic, sense of humor, spontaneity, delicious perogies, and her love for the Lord whom she served with such fervor! She loved her family and spoke frequently about you all. Praying for you as you grieve her passing! - Posted by: Carol Hartog (Nurse colleague, worked with Mary at Percy E. Moore Hospital, Hodgson, Mb.) on: Jul 06, 2013

  • I have fond memories as a child going to visit and Aunt Mary and Uncle Carl and all of my cousins. We always had a blast there! I was really proud of Aunt Mary taking her R.N. qualification at 51! Lot of love and big hugs to all of my cousins. - Posted by: Jane Fetterly-Bill (niece) on: Jul 05, 2013

  • I send my sincerest condolences on the loss of your mother. To have had someone whose own life was never to give up on her dreams in spite of sacrificing them for so long is inspiring and that spirit will no doubt be missed. Carry the good times in your heart from now forward and accept our prayers for peace to come to you all. - Posted by: Monique Graboski (Aquin) (Friend from Schooldays) on: Jul 04, 2013

  • The Fetterlies were a constant source of activity and adventure in our neighbourhood, with Mary at the centre. She was always open, frank, and funny. She also made great bread. Eating a piece of Mary's fresh homemade bread with real butter and peanut butter is one of my best memories. My love and condolences to all the dear, dear Fetterley kids (I still remember some of the crazy little rhymes Harvey used to make with his sister's names, and three-year-old Elden reciting "Algie Met a Bear"). Thanks to Mary for giving us the Fetterlies, and for being who she was in my life. - Posted by: Mary Pringle (friend) on: Jul 03, 2013
