CHARLES GEORGE KLEIN July 19, 1934 - June 28, 2013 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear father, grandpa and husband after a brief struggle with cancer. Predeceased by his parents, Fred and Katherine Klein, sister, Anna and brother Fred. He is loved and missed by his wife, Ruth, four children and six grandchildren, Kathy (Andre Martel) Daniel and Julien, Joan (Bradley Hyslop), Ron (Deanne Ruddock) Andrew and Aaron, and Jennifer (Gary Hawthorne) Katy and Anna, as well as his siblings, Ken, Dorothy, Donald and Kathy. He is also missed by his many good friends and neighbours. He was born in Smeaton, grew up in Snowden, Saskatchewan, and moved around northern Canada working for the Hudson's Bay Company, in the fur trade. He met and married the love of his life in Kaslo, BC. He settled in Winnipeg in 1967, and worked in retail. After retirement, he learned woodworking and spent many hours volunteering. His passion for travel with his truck and trailer included many trips across Canada, and the fulfillment of a lifelong dream to drive to Alaska. He was a lifelong member of the AOTS and volunteer for Habitat for Humanity. Charlie was known as "Woodchuck" for his carpentry skills and talents, which he shared with everyone he knew. He was known for his quick wit and humour, his generosity, hospitality, his love and loyalty to family and friends. A memorial service will be held at Windsor Park United Church, 1062 Autumnwood Drive, Winnipeg, on Thursday, July 4, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. A private family interment of the ashes will take place. In lieu of flowers, donations to the St. Boniface Hospital Palliative Care Unit, 8th floor (www.sbgh.mb.ca/home.html) would be appreciated. The Klein family would like to extend special thanks to the doctors and the nursing team at the St. Boniface Hospital Palliative Care Unit for their caring, compassionate comfort and services both for Charlie and the family during his stay. Special thanks to Chaplin Timothy Fenlon.

Condolences & Memories (12 entries)

  • I just found out about Mr. Klein's passing this evening, and it is so sad. I have a lot of fond memories of Mr. Klein (as we kids were instructed to call the kids' parents when we were small). I remember how kind he was--when I needed a desk in university he found an incredibly solid old oak desk at the warehouse for $20...just in my budget at the time! He told me how to pull the linoleum off the top and to sand it down then stain it, seal it...it worked like a charm. It carried me through four degrees. I remember the whole family coming out to visit us when we lived in Montreal, driving up Mount Royal in the back of their station wagon without seat belts, watching the stars at night while Charlie drove. I too remember his sense of humour, and how much he loved Ruth; he displayed this openly and it was heartwarming to watch. I saw less of them as the years went on and we all (kids) grew up, but that was always a family I knew we could go to if we ever needed to. I am so sorry that your husband (Ruth) and your dad (Kathy, Joan, Jennifer and Ron) is gone, because I know how much you must miss him. He was a great person, and you were all very blessed to have him with you, and he with you all. Much love to you all, Susan Lawrie and family xoxo - Posted by: Susan Lawrie (Family Friend) on: Dec 18, 2013

  • Back in the 80's, Charlie would drive me and his daughter Kathy to the University of Winnipeg. What a treat to be picked up in Charlie's heated truck on those cold winter mornings! • To my dear brother with whom I never spent enough time, I will always carry my memories in my heart, but also on my head, where the hammer you threw over the barn hit me (claws first), and I should have had stitches they say, but now I have this small bald spot, and I call it "Charlie". Love you bro - you fought a good fight - rest in peace. Love to Ruth & Family - Posted by: Kathy Volpatti (Sister) on: Jul 03, 2013

  • It has been many years since I have seen Charlie but have the fondest memories of him. He was great to work with as a buyer and to play golf with at the golf tournament even though I told him he cheated. My condolences to the Klein Family. I thought he was a great guy! - Posted by: Robert Epstein (Former supplier to Charlie At HBC many years ago ) on: Jul 03, 2013
