SUSAN CLARE SHEPHERD August 4, 1960 - July 22, 2013 Susie died in Winnipeg, July 22, after a second battle with cancer. She was a lifelong teacher, poet and writer. She lived in Edmonton, Montreal, Vancouver and France, but always returned to her favourite place: Winnipeg. Whether teaching ESL or high school in Winnipeg or France, working with her students was her greatest joy. She also enjoyed the arts, music and was never without a book and an opinion. She is survived by her partner of 33 years Mike Clive, her mother, Ann and siblings Mary, Jeremy, Chris, Tim and Peter. Susie was predeceased by her father, The Right Reverend Ronald F. Shepherd. Those who knew Susie experienced the "force of Nature" that she was, she lived her life on her terms and did things her way. We miss you Susie. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, July 26 at All Saints Church Chapel, Broadway and Osborne, The Reverend Doctor John Wortley Officiating Priest. • I am so saddened in hearing this news. My friendship with the Shepherd family began in my youth at Victoria Beach, but after their cottage was sold it was primarily Susie I would see in Winnipeg. She would often pass by my business on Henderson Hwy but I would also see her, and her characteristic gait, traipsing down streets throughout the city of Winnipeg, she walked everywhere! She was always good for some friendly chat and would catch me up on the goings on of her family. I, like many I'm sure, will miss those chance meetings and the company of this lovely lady. She was highly recognizable in her stature and stride but highly memorable in her personality and spirit. My thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time. - Posted by: Graham Cameron (friend) on: Jul 25, 2013

  • My sincere condolences to Susie's family, friends and also to the students who were lucky enough to have her as a teacher. I have fond and hilarious memories of a summer trip to Montréal when a bunch of us girls stayed in a frat house by McGill University. And Susie's laugh. I loved her laugh. She will be missed. - Posted by: Terry Bell (Friend) on: Jul 25, 2013

  • On behalf of the Canadian Pub Poker League I would like to express our deepest condolences to Mike and to Susie's family. "Those who knew Susie experienced the "force of Nature" that she was, she lived her life on her terms and did things her way." is an excellent description of her. While playing in the poker league, Susie never accepted losing a hand. However as time went on, I realized that it wasn't necessarily the win she always chased, it was playing the game she enjoyed. The loss of chips, more than anything, meant being closer to no longer playing. Something that did not sit well with Susie. However, there is no player in the league that could match the gleam in her eyes, nor the smile on her face, when she would arrive at the start of each poker tournament. Then as soon as the first hand was dealt it was all business. Susie's approach to the game was very unique and she was a regular amongst the league point leaders season after season. Susie and her "Celebrity Status" will be missed by all at the tables Canadian Pub Poker League - Posted by: Keith Legros (Friend) on: Jul 25, 2013

  • My condolences to the family and friends. Recently I had the chance to talk with Sue after many years; we were raffle ticket volunteers with the Jazz Festival. Vibrant and engaging she was that day. - Posted by: Roberta Dalman (friend) on: Jul 25, 2013

  • I have not seen Susie in years but have always thought of her as my friend. We worked and played together for years and what fun we had!! I still remember the halo she had to wear when she broke her neck! Life takes us in different directions but friendships last a lifetime. Sorry for your loss Mike and to Susie's family. - Posted by: Barb Husack (Friend) on: Jul 25, 2013

  • Our deepest condolences to Mike and to Susie's family. So sorry for your loss. We'll always remember the fun and laughs we had at the Norwood etc, in the past. After first meeting Susie years ago, I was introduced to her brother Chris...turns out Chris & I went to high school together. Small world! Our thoughts are with you.
