BARBARA STAWSKA Nasza kochana Mamusia, Babcia, i przyjaciolka Basia Stawska (nee Elizabeth Barbara Tucholska) died on Friday, October 18, 2013 at the age of 86. She was predeceased by her son-in-law Marek. Left to mourn is her daughter Krysia, her granddaughters Jessica and Samantha, and all her cherished friends. Basia was born in Kierniewice, Poland on February 8, 1927 where she was the youngest of three children. In September 1939, Germany invaded Poland, uprooting Basia's young life. She became a polish refugee, where she was deported to work camps in Siberia. She survived horrific living conditions, forced labour and disease. She left the Soviet Union with General Anders' Army in 1942, where she was placed in Kolhapur Valivade, India. In 1948, she was stationed at Kelvedon Hostel in Essex England, where newly discharged men from the armed services were ordered to work. There, Basia met and married Stanislaw Stawski on May 27, 1950. In 1954 the couple immigrated to Canada and in 1959 Krysia was born. Basia loved to sing and dance. She was an active member in the Polish community. She travelled to many countries and toured many cities. She was loved by everyone and will be missed by her family and all who had the pleasure of making her acquaintance. A service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, October 28 at Holy Ghost Church, 341 Selkirk Ave.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • I was so sad to hear of Cioca Basia's death - although I was a baby when she immigrated to Canada she remained my Mother's very close friend and whose wartime experience was very similar. I never met her in person but feel I knew her through my mother. Krysia please email me if you feel able to. Best wishes to you and your daughters. - Posted by: Irena Allin nee Benrad (God daughter) on: May 29, 2014
