LAUREL ELAINE CHESLEY 1969- 2013 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Laurel in Innisfail, AB on October 16, 2013 after a a lengthy battle with Multiple Sclerosis. Laurel is survived by her parents Larry and Barbara Chesley, sister and brother-in-law Lynn and Greg Parr, niece Nickayla Downey, nephew Dayne Downey, one aunt and uncle, Audrey and Robert Corrie and two cousins Shelley Karpa (Nelson), Brent Corrie (Pam) and their children. She also leaves her soul mate, companion and best friend Darcy Johnston of Winfield, AB. Laurel was born in Winnipeg and grew up in Petersfield, MB. She attended William S. Patterson School, Lockport Junior High and the Comp in Selkirk. She also attended Burns Oak Hill and New Smyrna Beach Junior High in Florida during the winters. Besides wintering in Florida for eight years, Laurel enjoyed a trip to Russia with a school group from the Selkirk Comp. Her work career included working at the family resort, her mobile pet grooming service, and as a nurse's aide at the Middle Church Nursing Home. Laurel was very active in 4H, loving all creatures great and small. She always had at least two dogs and a cat. Laurel was instrumental in having some MS drugs covered by Manitoba Health. She was a strong advocate for MS care in Manitoba. She moved to Alberta in 2002, living in Airdrie, Winfield, Wetaskiwin, Red Deer and finally in Innisfail, AB, at the Rosefield Care Centre. The family wished to express a very special thank you to Dr. Meding and the staff at Rosefield for their loving care and compassion to Laurel. A memorial service will be held for Laurel at the family cemetery in the summer of 2014, in Manitoba. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the M.S. Society of Manitoba, the SPCA or a charity of your choice. She will be dearly missed.

  • What very sad news to hear of Laurel's passing. I last saw Laurel almost 10 years ago in Calgary when she was visiting Lynn. I'll have great memories of horseback riding together out in the fields of Petersfield. Also good memories of taking in some Winnipeg night life as a 17 year old...Um..I mean, 18 year old :). We had some fun adventures...Laurel helped supervise as I learned to drive!! Perhaps a scary adventure for Laurel, but she did it all with a smile and her lovely giggle. I will remember the good times and fun that we had together. Life can be so very unfair, and it was not fair to Laurel, as I have a teary cry on her later life. The funny girl from Petersfield will be missed. - Posted by: Andrena Koch-Schulte (Teenage friend of Laurels) on: Nov 02, 2013

  • I too camped at Chesleys Resort since I was around 6. My parents Chuck and Sally worked for Barb and Larry. We lived in a trailer for years and spent many good times with the whole family always recieving gifts from their home away from home (Florida). Laurel was a kind and loving person as a child unfortunately I moved away and did not stay in touch. My heart goes out to the family. - Posted by: Gary Heatherington (Schoolmate,Friend) on: Nov 01, 2013

  • So sorry to read of Laurel's passing, she was just a little girl when we were campers and Janie worked in the store and sometimes baby sat her. We started out tenting at Chesleys in 1967 and finally ended up in a small trailer. I imagine Barb will remember our big black dog Spider! He and Ron used to go with Larry's Dad when things got rowdy at the gate on Sat. night. We lost our son Mike to Cancer 4 yrs. ago at 53, he was a camper with his own boys in the 80's. Such wonderful memories! Sincere Sympathy! - Posted by: Ron and Juanita Swayze and Jane Swayze Burnfield Trenton On. (Camp Chesley campers) on: Oct 28, 2013
