ELKA (ELLEN) PELTZ (nee LICHTMAN) Elka Peltz born April 12, 1911, passed away peacefully at the Simkin Centre Sunday, October 27, 2013 at 102 and a half years of age. She will be lovingly remember by her husband David, and three daughters, Sonia (Harold) Kaplan, Esther (Sam) Plucer, Shelly (Steve) Davis, her grandchildren: Marnie (Darren) Bondar, Tamara and Rebecca Plucer, Jill Davis, Haley (Trevor) Nace, and two great-grandchildren Jonah and Chloe Bondar, as well as several nieces and nephews. Elka was born in Zamosc, Poland, the fifth of nine children. She and her husband miraculously escaped Nazi Germany living for a period in Russia and eventually immigrating to Canada in 1950 with her three daughters. Their fourth daughter was born in Canada. Elka was predeceased by an infant son born in Siberia in 1940; her daughter Anne Moyle in 1973, her brother Sam (Sarah) Lichtman, sister Bernice (Wolfe) Zarnow, brother Yidel and nephew Edward Lichtman. She maintained an unwavering belief in Yiddishkeit and practiced kushrut to her last day. She spent her early years working as a seamstress, and in later life worked tirelessly in the family grocery store. Her sacrifice and devotion were focused on providing her daughters with the opportunity to better their own lives. By example she taught her children resiliency and resourcefulness. She was innovative and could fix almost anything. A 4'10" she stood proud and tall, with a backbone of steel and determination to meet the world with a smile- and what a smile she had! She was honoured on her 100th birthday, where she danced a hora. While we know that nobody is immortal, Elka sure gave it a good run. She will be sorely missed. May her memory be blessed. Many thanks to the staff at Simkin Centre. Funeral services were held on October 30, 2013 at Etz Chaim Synagogue, followed by interment at B'nai Abraham cemetery. If so desired, donations in her honour may be made to Elka Peltz Holocaust Education Fund, (204) 477-7520.
