Dear Jan, I always thought of your dad from time to time and just was thinking of him this morning. I did a google search and found this obituary, I am saddened to know he's no longer with us on this earth but I know for sure he's in a much better place. Even though my time spent with him was not very long we kept in touch for years via telephone, I will always treasure the memories and talks we had, he was the kindest most gentle man who cared deeply for all his patients. May God Bless him and may his soul rest in peace. Please accept my deepest sympathy. - Posted by: Cyrina LaFrenais (Former staff at his clinic) on: Feb 19, 2020

Dr Shnider has an amazing spot in my heart as he delivered both me and my daughter into this world. Every year my physical was on my birthday, he would open the file and say how long have we been seeing each other? Mrs Schneider and Janine would book the time for my actual birth time. He would just shake his head and say those girls. My daughter's birth was an emergency c section at the Vic, dr Arneja was obgyn was not getting much respect that day, things sure changed when he showed up and scrubbed in. on his way into the delivery room he winked at me and said we'll be back. Every time I go to a doctor's office now I'm reminded how fortunate I was to have him as my physician - Posted by: Christopher Howells (Patient ) on: Dec 27, 2013

Dr. Shnider was a wonderful person, friend and Doctor for me for over 40 years. He had a wonderful sense of humour. My Mother was initially his patient and she recommended him to me. When she passed away he came to the house to offer his condolences. He was a Doctor to my 3 sons and always asked about my siblings, some of whom were also his patients. The care and caring he provided was exceptional. I miss him and will always be grateful to have known him and to have been a patient and friend. - Posted by: Doug Tiltman (Patient) on: Nov 20, 2013

My family's condolences to Dr. Shnider's family for their loss of such a precious man. Dr. Shnider offered a warm smile and a genuine interest to all that he met. As past patients, my family was touched that Dr. Shnider was one of the few doctors who made house calls. He touched many lives with his beautiful musical talent, medical expertise and will be greatly missed. - Posted by: Penny Williams (co-worker, patient, friend) on: Nov 13, 2013

Dr Shnider was my family doctor for 40 years. I knew one day I would have to find another doctor and was not looking forward to this prospect - no one would ever be able to replace him. I saw him the week before he was forced into retirement because of health issues and consider myself blessed to have seen him one more time. He was a great doctor who took his time and did not rush you out of his office as many have already said. One time I was struggling with a horrible ear ache that was not resolving itself and he asked me to come to his clinic on a Sunday afternoon so he could help me (he was doing paperwork on his off time from seeing patients). I cannot even imagine any other doctor doing that for me on their time off! My sincere condolences to the family - I deeply regret I did not know he was ill and would have loved to have seen him and attended the funeral. You will be missed. - Posted by: Doris Miller (Patient) on: Nov 11, 2013

The Doc was a family doctor in the true sense. Every visit to him usually became a lengthy discussion about sports, etc. Such an interesting and talented man who will be sadly missed but very fondly remembered. - Posted by: David and Jayne Heaton (Patients) on: Nov 10, 2013

Dr. Shnider was our family Doctor for forty plus years. He always listened and never rushed you out of his office. He gave our daughter Holly and I a ride home after seeing him as he said we were on his way home. He always went the extra mile for his patients. We dearly will miss him. - Posted by: Ray & Lillian Holden (Patient) on: Nov 09, 2013

I am saddened at hearing of dear Dr. Shnider's passing. Along with MANY others I wish to express my condolences to his family. He will never be forgotten in my family, as a wonderful doctor to 3 generations of our family, and especially for me since he saved my life. If it were not for Dr. Shnider agreeing to see me last minute, and then pulling his friend Dr. Greenburg out of surgery to see me, my mother would have taken me home to die after the Children's hospital sent me home multiple times with nothing more than the 'Flu', which was actually a perfurated appendix. He will be truly missed, and remembered with many fond memories as an A++ doctor. - Posted by: Danica Mutcher (Patient) on: Nov 07, 2013

I am proud to have known one of the most kind and genuine of a "gentle man" who just happened to be my parents' Doctor; he welcomed me and my siblings into this world as well as my own two children. Although we parted ways (my choice), I can recall of how wonderful he was to me particularly when I was a child; nicknamed me "his Princess". Always there to listen with kind ears, never judged and was forever respectful. You will be missed. My deepest condolences to your family. You have truly broken the mold on what it means to have compassionate bedside manner..a lesson not necessarily instilled in some of today's practices. Rest well kind Sir. - Posted by: Corinne De Decker (Former patient) on: Nov 07, 2013

My condolences to Dr. Shnider's family. Dr. Shnider was our family doctor, and as we moved onto our own lives he continued being our doctor. He delivered both my children and looked after all of us. He was mine and my husband's doctor till he retired. So much should be said about this great man, father, doctor. It's like losing a part of your own family. He will be truly missed. Rest in Peace you have truly earned it. Barry, Janice, Kimberly, Wade, Cooke - Posted by: Cooke family (patient) on: Nov 07, 2013

So sorry to hear the news of his passing! He was a truly remarkable Dr. He was one of a kind! He was my Dad's, Dad's Dr., Then he became my Dr. when I was a baby(and helped me through many sicknesses over the years), and also delivered my first son in 1987. I moved away from Winnipeg, and when I went back home to visit my Mom, her and I went to visit Dr. S. when he was still above the drugstore (before his office moved). loved and not forgotten. Dr. Shnider was a family doctor in every sense of the word. There wasn't a problem too small or too big that he would not tackle. His wife and daughter also worked in his office and the feeling when you walked into his office was that you were going to see a friend. - Posted by: Shirley Lowden () on: Nov 06, 2013

It's with much sadness that I write this tribute to Dr. Shnider. He was my doctor and later friend ,from the time I came to Canada in 1975. He treated everyone with the same caring and gentle attitude so rare in many of his profession today. We always had things to talk about other than my health (over which he took a lot of care) flying, war stories and Catalina flights during WW2 to East Africa where I grew up. My wife and I will will miss him and send sincere condolences to his family. - Posted by: Trevor Pienaar (Patient) on: Nov 06, 2013

For many years in my teens Dr. Shnider was our family's physician located above the "Ringer's Pharmacy". I then had the privilege of working with him at the Vic as an X-ray technologist. He remained a family physician for many of my siblings and my husband. He is fondly remembered for his humour, compassion and genuine caring no matter what your situation was. He was one of a kind! Our sincere condolences to his family on their loss of a very good person and doctor. - Posted by: Eveline Joyal and family (co-worker/patient/friend) on: Nov 05, 2013

Today I share in the loss of a truly great man, friend and hero. My condolences to Dr. Shnider's family. In another life Maurice would have been a lyricist of some of Broadway's biggest hits. He was our family's doctor since 1969 and helped us through many trying times and health problems. With Remembrance Day coming he once shared a story of how he received his Distinquished Flying Cross (DFC) in a daring rescue mission during the Second World War. Dr. Shnider will be sorely missed.I salute the memory of a father, grandfather, doctor, Hero and a friend. Donn Kirton - Posted by: Donn Kirton (Patient & Friend) on: Nov 05, 2013

I first met Dr. Shnider at the old VGH back in 1957 when I worked at my first job following my graduation from the then WGH. He was always a pleasure to work with. He was one of the most compassionate and understanding of doctors that I have had the pleasure of working with over the years of my nursing career. He was our family doctor for years and never forgot to ask after our children even after they were grown and had left home. I worked with him again at the Fort Garry Care Centre many years later where he was one of the attending physicians. Before he left the building he always had time for a chat and we had the most interesting of conversations. It was like working with an old friend. My husband and I eventually retired out to the west coast but I always saw him for a short visit and received a big hug when back in Wpg. He will be fondly remembered not only by me but my entire family. My sincerest condolences to his family. - Posted by: Beverley Glenday (Nurse who worked at the old VGH, and a former patient) on: Nov 05, 2013

I was a patient of his for many years until his retirement and can say without any hesitation that he was first and foremost a kind and warm hearted gentleman. As a physician and surgeon he stood above any others I've known in my life. His breed of doctor just does not exist any longer and his passing is a loss to the medical community at large and to our community. Rest in Peace doctor Shnider. - Posted by: Daryl (patient) on: Nov 05, 2013

Condolences to Dr. Shnider's Family. Dr. Shnider was The Alexander's family Physician for 44 years. When I started my family, Dr. Shnider cared for my three children from the day they were born, until his retirement. Maurice always gave the children his undivided attention, and always went to the secret closet to give them a treat. They were the highlight of his day! We all made a special visit to see Maurice last week, shared more stories and talked of all our memories. Dr. Shnider said he was truly blessed to have known us, but we are the ones that were truly blessed. Rest in Peace Dr. Shnider - Posted by: Donna Alexander and Family (Patient) on: Nov 05, 2013

My condolences go out to Dr. Shnider's family. He was a wonderful person as well as was his wife and children. When Dr. Shnider had hip surgery I looked after him at his home and then when he got better I stayed on with the family taking care of Mrs. Shnider. It was a joy to be a part of their lives and I look back with fond memories of that time. Dr. Shnider also delivered both my children and looked after them as they were growing up. He was my doctor for over 40 years. He was a wonderful, caring person and he will be missed. - Posted by: Carolyn Wagne (Patient, friend and caregiver to both Dr. Shnider and his wife.) on: Nov 05, 2013

Dr. Shnider was my aviation Dr. seeing him twice a year to renew my pilot's licence. He was always interested in my travels and I in his passionate stories of his service on the Catalina. In his examining rooms he had pictures and prints of this aircraft and I would imagine this intriguing man guiding this aircraft across the vast oceans in those terrible wars. I asked him a few years ago, when he was having so much trouble walking due to a bad leg joint, "When will I have to find another Dr. to do my medicals Dr.?" He replied " It's because of you pilots coming in here and sharing our stories that keep me wearing this!" (Lifting his stethoscope slightly) To all his family, friends and fellow former patients, I express my deep sorrow in his passing. His 'Old School' values will live on in all of us! - Posted by: Kevin Gray (Parient of Dr. Shnider for over 30yrs) on: Nov 05, 2013

Dr. Shnider saved my life many years ago, when I had appendicitis as a child. I also remember him in his Office in the train Station at Broadway and Main, when I applied for a job at CNR. He lived a long life, and he helped so many, I was sad to hear the news of his passing . Brian Klym Mazatlan, Mexico - Posted by: Brian Klym (patient) on: Nov 05, 2013

Dr Shnider was a wonderful person always willing to listen and help his patients. His love of hockey and football made him a great supporter of the WPG Jets and Bombers. He also entertained physicians and staff with his fantastic December musicals. Dr. Shnider was the best. He literally brought me into this world and I was his patient until his retirement. I will never forget the picture of me he had in my file, when I was in the newspaper for being a ringette goalie as a kid, like he was proud of my accomplishments. I think he was proud of me. He really cared and went that extra mile for all his patients. I will miss you, Dr. Shnider. - Posted by: Jill Bemi (Former Patient) on: Nov 04, 2013

I was privileged to work on Unit 3 south with Dr Shnider for many years. We used to joke that I better not have a message for him up on the hockey arena sign when he was at a hockey game. Had I had a message, he would have come. That was the kind of doctor he was. He looked after my grandmother and my mother. He was patient and would explain why a certain kind of treatment was preferable. He educated the nurses, made us laugh and was such a professional. Gentleman is the word used by someone else here and I agree. Thank you Dr Shnider. You are well loved by so many. I was so glad to know you and to see you before your passing. God bless. - Posted by: Chyanne Webb (I worked with Dr Shnider at the Victoira Hospital for many years.) on: Nov 04, 2013

At the time that I knew Dr. Shnider, my maiden name was Douglas. I worked for him above the drugstore on Pembina Highway. I was also with the 64 graduating class from the "OLD Vic". Have many memories of him and the family. He loved to play jokes on me. My heartfelt sympathy to the family. He was a great man. Eileen - Posted by: Eileen Bartley (co-worker) on: Nov 04, 2013

Condolences to Dr. Shnider's family. Dr. Shnider was a very caring gentle man who gave up many "family hours" and functions to rush to a patient's need. I know he was always there for our family. As a young girl I remember Dr. Shinder coming to our house when someone was sick or injured and also meeting him at the emergency room on numerous occasions over the years. I was a patient of Dr. Shnider's for approximately 50 years and right up to his retirement and greatly appreciated all he & his staff did to care for our family over the years. He is dearly missed and will always be part of our family history and memories. - Posted by: Janelle & Len Dombrowski (patients) on: Nov 04, 2013

Maurice Shnider was a gem. Never mind that he was a real mensch. That he was a skilled doctor who could relate one to one with a patient is well known. He was pleasant to be around and spoke so gently. And was the epitome of a gentleman What perhaps is less well known was his ability as a wordsmith particularly in lyrics. He might well have been Winnipeg's king of parodies. I know this first hand from my involvement with him at Shaarey Zedek's 100th anniversary celebrations some time ago. He did all the songs by way of clever verses to familiar tunes and I can say without hesitation, his material was an enormous success. And he did this frequently for other groups especially the medical establishment. How many people did Maurice Shnider entertain? Who knows? But, we are into thousands and no one really knew it was his creativity, originality and impeccable timing on the notes that made for these big hits. A real talent was he. Maurice was always interested in what I was doing and I will recall him fondly as I know many others do. - Posted by: Gerry Posner (friend) on: Nov 04, 2013
