Date of Passing: Nov 04, 2013
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDUKE KIRKPATRICK Duke Kirkpatrick died Monday, November 4 at the age of 85 after a good life and a long journey with Alzheimer's. He leaves to mourn his devoted and caring wife Audrey, to whom he was married for 62 years, and his children Duncan (Bev), Laurie Lee (Jim), Bruce (Wendy) and Cameron (Cyndy) as well as many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Duke was born in Winnipeg in 1928 and joined the navy in 1946, travelling extensively for the next two years. He spent the next eight years with the Winnipeg City Police, leaving the force to become an inspector with the Manitoba Liquor Control Commission. Duke retired as Chief Inspector in 1983. Duke was always very athletic and was a talented boxer in his youth; he later coached hockey and enjoyed curling for many years. He loved being out of doors and enjoyed hunting, fishing and camping with all his children. He was fortunate to have been able to retire early at the age of 55 and to have spent the next many years with Audrey travelling to Arizona and living in Sooke and in Duncan, BC. He enjoyed golfing and working as a course marshall in BC and took up wood carving, presenting each of his children with beautiful carvings. Duke was always a Winnipeg boy at heart and he and Audrey returned to Winnipeg in 2000. They both very much enjoyed their time spent at Southwood and Southside Golf clubs. Duke moved to Golden Links in 2011, and the family truly appreciates the wonderful care provided by the staff on the second floor and in the special needs unit. Audrey is especially grateful for the compassion and kindness shown to Duke by staff who expressed their sympathy and told her how much they would miss Duke and his outgoing personality and sense of humour. In lieu of burial, Duke's body has been donated to the University of Manitoba Faculty of Medicine in accordance with the family's wishes in the hope that this contribution will assist in research respecting Alzheimer's disease. No service is planned. The Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba was of immense assistance to Audrey and Duke in providing information, peer support and new friendships. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba, 10-120 Donald Street, Winnipeg, R3C 4G2, or to Golden Links Lodge, 2280 St. Mary's Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba, R2N 3Z6.

Duke hired me in 1980 as an Inspector. In the short time I worked for him he proved himself a true leader and friend with the Inspectors. Things Duke told me then I use now with my staff. I am sorry to see him gone, take care Audrey. - Posted by: R. W. Myall, Senior Inspector MLCC (employee) on: Nov 18, 2013

I had the opportunity to work with Duke at the MLCC back in the '80's and he was a prince of a man; the "go to guy" in the inspection department if you wanted to get something done. Sad to hear he's gone, but a life worth living! - Posted by: Don Tomac (coworker) on: Nov 09, 2013

Dear Audrey, I was saddened to read about your loss. Although I only met Duke on occasion at Southside, his pleasant jovial manner made those meetings memorable. You must miss him dearly. My sincere condolences to you and the family - Posted by: Bob Reynolds (Southside golfing acquaintance ) on: Nov 08, 2013

Dear Audrey: It was so nice to speak with you recently. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. It was a real pleasure to get to know you and Duke a few years ago, through Dad. Duke had such an upbeat personality; I always enjoyed talking with both of you and especially enjoyed breakfasts in St. Norbert! Take good care, and God Bless you.
