ELLA FLORENCE CARD (nee BARRETT) 1917 - 2013 On Thursday, November 14, at Golden Links Lodge, Ella Card passed away peacefully, and at peace. She is lovingly remembered, and will be sadly missed by her son Don, son Ernie and wife Susan (nee Darracott), granddaughter Cheryl, grandson Dallas, Cheryl's husband Michael Lynch, great-granddaughter Sarah, great-grandson Connor, cousin Eileen Davidson, nephews and nieces Dan and Louise, Gary, Jeff, Josie, Joan, Donna and Dennis Pocekay, Carl Norquist, Laura Ruud, and all their children and grandchildren, as well as long-time friends Nora Grenfell and Olive Gabe. Ella was predeceased by her parents Alf and Stella Barrett, daughter-in-law Pat, husband Charlie, brother-in-law Clarence, sisters-in-law Eileen, Mabel, Connie and Honnie, nephew Howard, great-granddaughter Katie, niece Susan, as well as Melba and Jim Darracott and many other dear friends. Ella was born in Rivers, Manitoba on July 21, 1917. Her family moved to Winnipeg in 1924, and later settled in Norwood. She met Charlie Card (also born in Rivers), and they were married in 1940 at St. Philip's Anglican Church. Always a very generous and giving person, Ella was active in St. Philip's Church (where she was awarded the "Order of St. Philip's" for her tireless work), the Salvation Army, UNICEF, the Humane Society, and many other charitable associations. She was also very appreciative of her blessings and good fortune. In her words "I have lived a long life, a happy life, had a wonderful husband and family, and many true friends. I was blessed with many years of good health, which enabled me to participate in the many interests and hobbies I had. I have so much for which to be thankful". Ella and her family would like to thank her god-daughter Elaine Hooper for spending endless hours with Ella the last several years, making that phase of her life more enjoyable. Thanks are also extended to the staff at Gold! en Links Lodge, to Reverend Linda Parsons and frequent visitors from St. Philip's Anglican Church. A tea to celebrate Ella's life will be held at St. Philip's Anglican Church Wednesday, November 27 at 10:00 a.m. A memorial service will be held in the spring. Donations may be made to St. Philip's Anglican Church, Salvation Army, Winnipeg Humane Society, or a charity of one's choice.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Because Ella was married to my Dad's identical twin brother, she was like a second Mom to me. Her 2 boys, Don and Ernie, are more like brothers than cousins. Ella used to trade off with my Mom, Eileen, to look after her 2 boys and my 3 brothers and I, at Gull Lake in the summers, when we were young. One one occasion I remember bringing a Garter snake into the cabin and dropping it when Ella screamed. She was deathly afraid of snakes. I think that's the only time she ever got mad at me! - Posted by: Gary Card (Nephew) on: Dec 10, 2013

  • Deepest sympathies. Ella was my Godmother and a constant source of love and support through my life. She never missed a birthday wish, Xmas, Easter and she found a way in her own busy life and family, to attend every milestone I had growing up. I am so very thankful that my mother Nora Grenfell had such a friend in some very difficult times. She will be missed, and going home to Winnipeg will never be quite the same again as it always meant a lunch visit with my Auntie Ella. - Posted by: Christine Howe nee Grenfell (Goddaughter) on: Nov 26, 2013
