BARNEY CHARACH 1922 !2013 Barney passed away peacefully November 23, 2013 at the age of 91. From early on it was apparent that Dad was quite a character. We have been inundated with stories starting from his youth of his shenanigans and mischievous nature. He was an avid teller of jokes, always rewarded with instant laughter. It was this gift that allowed him to capture spontaneous expressions in the photos he took during his 60 years of professional photography. Dad always said that the happiest and proudest time of his life was serving with the Royal Canadian Air Force overseas from 1942-1945. It was in the photographic division of the Air Force where he was formally trained in photography. Dad also ran charters to Las Vegas as a secondary business. With his wife and partner Myrna by his side he greeted and escorted thousands of people. And again more memories have been shared with us of the good times people had on these junkets. Dad was twice blessed with two life partners. He was married to Bernice for 28 years. After her passing, he was fortunate to meet Myrna and shared 40 happy years with her. During dad's lengthy illness, the palliative care team were there for us at every turn. There are too many to name and thank personally. It is the family's wishes that donations be made in Barney's memory to the Palliative Care Endowment Fund, St. Boniface Hospital Foundation, 409 Tache Avenue, R2H 2A6 (204)237-2067.

  • Sorry I missed this obit. Barney took quite a few of our passport photos. My parents, Martin and Ruth Bergen took at least a couple of trips to Vegas with him. - Posted by: Miriam Bergen (Daughter of Martin and Ruth BergeN) on: Mar 30, 2016

  • We were so sorry to hear of uncle Barney's passing. He was always so kind to me. I still have the "silver wedding bell music box" he gave me when I was seven years old. We were at the studio to have our portraits taken and I saw two of them sitting on a table and asked him who they were for. He told me he gives them to all the brides when they come to have their photos taken. Then he picked one up and handed it to me and said I could have it because I looked as pretty as a bride. I will never forget you uncle Barney!!! *HUGS TO YOU ALL* - Posted by: Robin + Maureen Richardson (My Uncle Barney) on: Dec 19, 2013

  • Oh Barney took away the nerves of having a "portrait" taken ... made everyone feel comfortable. He never forgot a face or a name and greeted everyone like he'd known them all his life and seen them every day ... and would give them a great handshake or hug. He will be missed by everyone who ever had the honour to meet him. - Posted by: Gini Lauder (one of those students from Balmoral Hall and U of M) on: Dec 06, 2013

  • I am one of thousands of high school and university students who have fond memories of Barney... a man who remembered everything about each of us (including our names!... even after years had passed!) and was always kind and gracious. He taught us all ... just by his example... about the sort of person we should strive to become. Thank you Barney. - Posted by: Leslie (Manos) Worts () on: Dec 06, 2013

  • Remember when the Schultz children gave their parents the surprise of a lifetime when they saw us boarding the plane to Vegas minutes before takeoff. They had no clue what was happening. We of course had decided that they could not go to Vegas and celebrate their anniversary without us. The look on their faces and the reaction from all the passengers was priceless. We could not have pulled that off without you and Barney. Now just a month apart we lost our dad and you have lost Barney. Wishing you all the best at this difficult time. • To the many nameless graduates who Barney pulled a smile out of, thanks for the memories. I smiled when I saw the face even though I did not know him. Like thousands if others, he captured my life on film. - Posted by: Brian Humniski (Fan) on: Dec 01, 2013

  • Although a very distant relative (my maternal grandmother was a Charach), Barney always acknowledged me as family whenever we encountered each other. Through years I had occasion to see Barney several times a year. Or more through High School, University, fraternity parties, med school affairs, etc., etc, etc. He was always there. Always pleasant & courteous and respectful to everyone. After leaving Wpg. in 1976 I had not seen him for years until he appeared at one of our med school reunions several years ago; it was as though he was an integral part of the reunion & the entire class greeted him as though he was one of us & all were delighted to have him there. Happy to say I still have numerous photos taken by Barney and will always cherish them and the person who took them. He was much more than a photographer, he was like part of everyone's family, always there at every and any event, and always delightful to be with. He will be dearly missed by almost everyone who grew up in Wpg in 50's, 60's and 70's - Posted by: Arnold Zeal, MD (very distant relative) on: Nov 30, 2013

  • Remembering as a youngster in Wpg. our family going to Charach studio for our individual and family photos. Still have some of them. My condolence to the family. - Posted by: vern riediger , toronto (childhood client) on: Nov 30, 2013

  • Barney captured much of the history of Winnipeg on film. At any event there was Barney (and Art). Barney chronicled the adolescence of many of us- from school dances and dinners to high school grads and proms at the Royal Alec and anywhere else his services were needed. You knew you had a good time at an event as soon as the prints marked Paramount Studios arrived. His photos keep time alive for many. Take some great photos up there, Barney. - Posted by: Allan Tucker (customer) on: Nov 30, 2013

  • Thinking of you Myrna, glad to have met your husband a number of years ago. Wishing you God's comfort. Vic, Joan and Amy - Posted by: Vic Laird (family acquaintances) on: Nov 30, 2013

  • My heart goes out to Barney's family as you have lost a true gem and Wpg. has not only lost a great citizen but man that was loved by all who knew him. I had not seen Barney for almost 40 years when he took my picture with my winning hairstyling models. I moved to B.C. shortly after and came back for a hair show 8 years ago and went to him to say hello and he called me by name and through conversation told me what I had won. That is a remarkable man and one that loved his profession. God Bless You in the Hereafter. - Posted by: Clifford Horsfall (customer) on: Nov 30, 2013
