Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryANGELINE MERCURY (nee POULOS) Angeline Mercury, 93, of Northbrook, Illinois and formerly of Winnipeg, died peacefully on December 31, 2013 after a brief illness. Angeline, known to most as "Yiayia", was born in Boone, Iowa to the late Theodore and Mary (Baki) Poulos. She attended Clark College in Dubuque, Iowa and later worked as executive secretary for the Research and Development Department of U.S. Rubber during the Second World War. Her organizational and people skills served her well over the years as a busy wife, mother, and member of a large extended Greek family. Angeline's family and friends were the cornerstone of her life. She gave her family and friends unconditional love, and kept in touch with them via frequent phone calls. Meeting her husband-to-be, George Mercury, was love at first sight for Angeline and George. They had met on Thursday and he proposed on Sunday. From the date of her marriage on May 17, 1951, she spent many years in Winnipeg and was a prominent member of the Greek Community of Winnipeg, as well as a devoted member of the Parish of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, including the Ladies Philoptochos Society. During her many years in Winnipeg, she assisted in the management of the family business, Grammas Fruit, Flowers, and Candy located downtown at the corner of Portage Avenue and Vaughn Street. Angeline was also a longtime member of the American Women's Club of Winnipeg. Angeline was preceded in death by George Mercury, her husband. She was also preceded in death by her dear brother, Tom, of South Bend, Indiana, who died seven months ago to the day. Angeline is survived by her son Dr. Michael G. Mercury, daughter-in-law Dr. Victoria Braund, and grandchildren Sarah and Lauren, of Northbrook, Illinois; sisters-in-law Penny Poulos, of South Bend, Indiana, and Evangeline Mercury of Winnipeg; and many beloved nieces and nephews in Canada and the United States. For the last 16 years of her life, Angeline lived with her son and his family. She helped raise her grandchildren in the family traditions and heritages, and imparted to them her love of cooking. Visitation at 1:00 p.m., and prayers (trisagion) at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, January 17 at Thomson Funeral Home, 669 Broadway in Winnipeg, with interment immediately following at Brookside Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations in memory of Angeline, be sent to St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 2255 Grant Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3P 0S2. May her memory be eternal.
