WALTER (DIXIE) DOWGAN January 8, 1933 - January 27, 2014 It is with the greatest sadness and shock that we announce the passing of Walter on the night of January 27, 2014 in Concordia Hospital. He was predeceased by son Darrell in 2004. He is survived by his loving wife Joanne, of 59 years and daughter Donalene. He is also survived by his sisters Evelyn and Nilda. He was born on January 8, 1933 sharing his birthday with his favourite singer Elvis Presley. He was born in Transcona where he lived all his life. He was a carman for the Canadian National Railway till he retired in 1994. He made headlines in the newspaper for being an excellent baseball pitcher playing for the Transcona Seniors even though he was a Junior. He loved music and watching sports; especially the Winnipeg Jets with Donalene. He also loved our three cats, Pom-Pom, Contessa, and Elvis. They miss him dearly. Thank you to CancerCare Manitoba for taking care of him for the last seven years and the staff at Concordia Hospital. At Walter's request there will be no service. Cremation has taken place and a gathering of family and friends will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to CancerCare Manitoba. Dixie, we love you and miss you terribly.

Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • Having not known of your husband/father's passing until last week my heart goes out to you on the loss of your loved one. As I had dropped by last week to visit and then learn of his passing I want you to know how sorry I am to have not have had the pleasure and privilege to have met him sooner or known him longer for I liked him. Losing the mother of my 3 daughters, then especially losing Darlene whom I loved dearly and miss terribly and finally my father all in a 13 month period has left me with anguish and grief that I for now carry with me on a daily basis. Death is never easy to accept no matter the circumstances and I know Dixie was a good husband/father/provider and a friend to many and that many of your fond memories of him will survive. Please accept my sincere condolences on his passing and know in my heart that I consider it a privilege to have known him. Kris Anderson - Posted by: Kris Anderson (Friend) on: Mar 09, 2014

  • I sure will miss Dixie a wonderful friendly neighbour ! I aLways will remember the great oldies tunes he played outside in the summertime while doing yard work as long as he felt well. Such happy days. Very nice chats and waives to a lovely man. My sincere sympathy extended to Joanne and Donalene. You two girls take care of each other. - Posted by: Karen Schmidt (Neighbour/friend) on: Feb 11, 2014
