M. EDWARD MCDERMIT On January 29, 2014, with family at his side, Ed passed away peacefully at the Kelowna General Hospital at the age of 85 years. He will be forever loved and missed by his wife, Vi (Beatty), daughter Sharen (Greg), grandsons: Chris Scalena (Jana, great-granddaughter Marion), Matt Scalena (Kim, great-granddaughter Ophelia), Adam Scalena (Sabrina), sister Marlene King, the Beatty family, and many nieces and nephews. Ed was predeceased by his parents, two sisters and two brothers. Born March 13, 1928 in Pierson, MB to Malcolm and Roxie (Drier) McDermit, Ed was named in honour of his father, Malcolm, and his Uncle Edward, who was killed in action in 1918. Ed was a loving husband and father and a proud grandpa who imparted his sense of adventure to his grandsons. Being in cahoots with Grandpa has led to endless happy memories for his grandsons. He treasured his time with them and was always there to help and support with driving, projects and extra-curricular activities. Ed was in sales all of his working life, first in Brandon and later in Winnipeg. He retired from Eaton's in 1993. One of Ed's favourite places was Riding Mountain National Park and one of Ed's passions was fishing and so upon retirement Ed and Vi resided at their cottage at Clear Lake and wintered in Mesa, Arizona. During this time he enjoyed lots of fishing, golf, gardening and spending time with family and friends. In 2004, Ed and Vi moved to Westbank, BC, where he took great pleasure watching every Jets game after the team returned to Winnipeg. Ed was a true friend who was always happy to help others. His do-it-yourself determination showed more than one person that square pegs can be persuaded to fit into round holes! He liked people and showed it with his kind ways and easy disposition. The twinkle in his eye and the good laughs he shared with many will never be forgotten. He truly was one of the good guys! A Private Celebration of Ed's life will be held in Manitoba at a later date.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Ed was a great brother-in-law. Always there to give a helping hand to whoever needed it-including us. We had many good times -golfing, fishing and those wonderful "Happy Hours". Spent a lot of time together over the years - both in Winnipeg and Riding Mountain National Park - one of Ed's favorite places - He will always be in our hearts. - Posted by: Mal & Diane Valentini (Brother-in-law, sister-in-law) on: Mar 07, 2014

  • We met Ed when he took his grandson Matt on his hockey road trips and we had a lot of fun and laughs with him. You could not find a nicer man who treasured his 3 grandsons, adored daughter Sharen and wife Vi who I happened to meet and work with at EIA. You may have lost a dear person however Ed would want you to remember him in all the good times. Hugs Colleen and Hans Mohr - Posted by: Colleen and Hans Mohr (Friend) on: Mar 02, 2014
