HEINZ (HENRY) MARTIN DOERR Heinz (Henry) Martin Doerr on Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at the age of 76. Survived by his partner of 42 years, Vernon; his sister Helga (Klaus) in Germany, her son Udo and grandaughter Celina; his son Frank (Ulricka) born and baptized in Winnipeg and grandson Maik; a very special aunt Franziska (Friedel); good friends Isholde and Mike in the U.S., and many cousins internationally. Heinz was born in 1937 in Diedishiem, Germany. As a young man he worked in the vineyards for 4 years before immigrating to Canada in 1957. In Winnipeg he worked for four years for the CN Railway before joining the Misericordia General Hospital as an orderly. In 1962 Heinz became a Canadian citizen taking an oathe to the Queen and Country. He took this very seriously and became a dedicated Monarchist, changing his name to Henry. Also in this year he started working as an assistant in the Pathology Department at the Misericordia. The highlight of his career at the hospital was recognizing the need for and initiating a memorial grave for fetuses from the maternity ward. For five years after his retirement he volunteered at these memorial burials until the maternity ward closed. Heinz also volunteered at the Agape Table twice weekly for six years as well as at St. Mary's Cathedral twice a week for collection until this February. Heinz loved gardening, especially growing his tomatoes from seed in the spring to harvesting his grapes in the fall. He loved his cats and had many over the years, his last being his favorite, a beautiful Maine Coon named Dolly. Heinz liked to travel, holidaying in Acapulco every winter and Europe every other year. Family and friends would like to thank the staff at Cancer Care, Health Sciences Centre and a very special thank you to the staff in Palliative Care at St. Boniface Hospital for the kind and respectful treatment given to our lovely, sweet, gentle Heinz. No flowers please, Donations to Palliative Care at St. Boniface would be greatly appreciated. Funeral services will be held at Thomson Funeral Home, 669 Broadway on Tuesday June 10, 2014. Viewing at 1:00 p.m., service at 2:00 p.m. with interment to follow. "He was my Sun, My Moon, My Evening Star" Till we meet again Love you Honey THOMSON FUNERAL HOME 669 BROADWAY, WINNIPEG, MB R3C OX4 783-7211 Condolences may be sent to www.thomsonfuneralchapel.com

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • It has been many years since I have seen Henry. I worked with him many years ago in the lab at Misericordia. He was always very helpful and kind to me. I will always remember him. Diane McKay - Posted by: Diane McKay (Former co-worker) on: Jun 08, 2014

  • We had a house right across from Henry for over 20 years. We shared a love of gsrdening, we shared our apples, he shared his wonderful homemade wine. Frank, a carpenter by trade, built Henry's garage, deck and renovated almost every room in his house over the years. We enjoyed our dear Henry's caring, kind, gentle ways. He always had an encouraging word, a cheery hello or a gardening tip to share. He was very empathetic when I lost my brother in 1995 and sadly both passed on the same date years apart. We will never forget his smile and the way he was to our family. - Posted by: Frank and Donene (neighbours and friends ) on: Jun 07, 2014

  • Heinz & Vernon were customers of mine at Sorrentos for 27 years. They are family to us. Heinz always had great stories or helpful hints from home projects or my love life, he loved life and always talked about his travels. He especially loved his home, his garden & decorating at Christmas! And the amazing love between him and Vernon. RIP dear friend, we will all miss you. - Posted by: Mena Perrault (Friend) on: Jun 07, 2014
