HELEN ELIZABETH (BETH) BUTCHER (nee BICKFORD) It is with sad hearts that we announce Beth's passing in Winnipeg, MB on Monday, June 9, 2014. Beth is survived by her daughter, Cathy Hickey (Brian) of Lillooet, BC; sons, Rob Butcher (Annie) of Lacombe, AB, Mike Butcher of Edmonton, AB; 10 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, her sister-in-law, nephew, niece; and three very special cousins. She was predeceased by her parents Harry and Tannis Bickford; brother, Floyd (Bick) Bickford; and granddaughter, Lindsey Butcher. Beth was born and raised in The Pas, MB on October 25, 1930. She was a dedicated mother to her three children, and was a very private and giving person. In 1990, Beth moved to Winnipeg to be close to her brother, Bick, and his wife, Stella. Special times in Beth's life included going to the University of Manitoba where she met many of her lifelong friends and majoring in Home Economics. She completed her teaching degree later in life and worked at Scott Bateman Junior High and Margaret Barbour Collegiate in The Pas. A few years before her retirement, Beth worked in the Civil Service providing home making instruction and nutrition advice to clients in the smaller communities near The Pas. She enjoyed and was very skilled in sewing, knitting, and "handy-woman" projects where her determination and resourcefulness shined. Her other hobbies included cooking, reading and swimming. Beth's most favourite place was the cabin at Clearwater Lake, near The Pas, where she spent many a happy time. A Graveside Service will be held in The Pas, MB in September, 2014. A special thank you to the nurses and staff at Riverwood Square (Beethovan House) and Golden Links Lodge for your excellent care and love for Beth. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Alzheimer's Society or to Golden Links Lodge, 2280 St. Mary's Rd., Winnipeg, MB R2N 3Z6. Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Beth has been part of my life for my whole life. She was my mother's roommate at U of M. My mother, Marilyn Pratt, corresponded with Beth when they lived apart, and visited when they lived close together . I was fortunate to visit Beth when I lived in The Pas, and had several visits in Winnipeg after my mom passed away in 1999. My best wishes to her family. - Posted by: David Pratt (Family friend) on: Jun 28, 2014

  • Mrs. Butcher was my Home Ec. teacher way back in grade 7. She was strict but passionate about teaching her students the basics of food preparation. Her dedication to her calling has made many, many students over the years great cooks and bakers! Too often we forget to acknowledge those key people who educated us to become well-rounded adults. p.s. I still remember the egg flipper versus spatula debate. Who knew Home Ec. could create such controversy! - Posted by: Colette Wallace () on: Jun 14, 2014
