She was predeceased by her much beloved husband of 53 years Elwood (Sonny) in 2009, precious infant son, Jamie, parents Hester and Russell Slater, two sisters Ethel (Alec) and Helen (Earle) and brother Jack (Shirley). Fern graduated and was employed at the Union Stockyards on Marion for Canadian Livestock (Manitoba Pool). She retired as office manager after 30 years. Fern loved being a sports spectator, watching Sonny and Lindsay curl, Amber play soccer and Jordan play hockey as well as cheering on her nieces and nephews. She was an avid bingo player and enjoyed her favorite TV programs. She enjoyed watching all the professional sports. She was particularly passionate about curling, having fought through snow storms to attend the Canadian Olympic Curling Trials with sister Iris. Sonny and Fern spent many summers with the family at their cottage at Sunset Beach where they made some good friends over the years. A special thank you to Aunty Iris for her loving support and her countless trips to the hospital. A gathering of family and friends to celebrate Fern's life was held on Friday, July 11 at the family's home in Transcona where they lived for over 50 years. Cremation has taken place and a private family interment will take place at Green Acres where she will be forever at Sonny's side. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Canadian Diabetes Society. "Yesterday is a memory, today is a promise and tomorrow is a gift"
