Dianne and I lived across the street from Herb and Lorraine and their daughters Gerianne, Susan, Lisa and Krista from 1976 to 1991. They were among a group of wonderful neighbours surrounding us when our twins, Blake and Brooke, were very young. Herb had a wonderful sense of humour with an infectious laugh. He was especially talented and there appeared to be absolutely nothing he couldn’t fix, or in the case of Model A Fords, couldn’t restore perfectly. He was a gem and will be greatly missed by family and friends, but always remembered fondly by Dianne and I and Blake and Brooke. - Posted by: Jim and Dianne Harley (neighbours) on: Jul 25, 2014

With regret, I cannot be in Winnipeg to share my sympathies as well celebrate the life of my Uncle Herbie, who was also my godfather. My uncle Herbie was a very blessed man, with a family who deeply cared for him, as greatly demonstrated over the past year and a half or so. He (and my Auntie Lorraine) always had a very busy household with their 4 active daughters, my cousins: GerriAnne, Susan, Lisa and Krista. I always looked forward going over to my cousin's place, because there were so many girls and girly things to do. Uncle Herbie was surrounded! It was almost a "guarantee" that when you went to Uncle Herbie's and Auntie Lorraine's home for the family gatherings, there was a lot of activity, music and ample to drink and food to eat. Uncle Herbie was a good sport when it came to having pranks played on him. One of my fondest memories was at the very first Prellwitz Family Reunion, back in 1982 on the Marohn's farm, which earned him the highly-coveted "Herbie Schmidt Champion Woodchopper 1982 Prellwitz Reunion" award, which proudly mounted a cap of his that he inadvertently chopped up, being blind-folded, during the contest. He was the only contestant. When the blindfold was taken off, his reaction was priceless! When I emailed Jack of Uncle Herbie's passing, Jack immediately called me from Brazil. The first words he spoke were: "Poor Pickles"! In case you are wondering, "Pickles" was a long-term nickname for my cousin Susan, one of Uncle Herbie's many daughters. I could not help but laugh! In this moment of bereavement, it showed me that Jack actually DOES listen to me and my stories about my family and extended family! Thank you Jack. Uncle Herbie, you have been very blessed with a wonderful family. I am grateful to have had you as my godfather; to have this moment to express my love and appreciation for having you in my life. Thank you everyone for this moment, Jack and Rose. - Posted by: Rose Held (Niece and Goddaughter) on: Jul 24, 2014

I have heard such wonderful stories and have spent such good times with him that I will miss him so very much.
