GEORGE (CLIFF) CLIFFORD FRYERS
Date of Passing: Jul 28, 2014
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryGEORGE (CLIFF) CLIFFORD FRYERS August 14, 1921 - July 28, 2014 With deep sadness we announce the passing of George Clifford Fryers, Retired Captain of the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada, on Monday, July 28, 2014 at Lake of the Woods Hospital, Kenora, ON, at the age of 92 years. Left to cherish Cliff's memory are his beloved wife Marie; children Pat (Ron), Don (Laureen), Nancy (Lloyd), Bob (Jenny); stepson Gary Snell; as well as by several grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Cliff was born in Saskatoon, the youngest of five children. He lived most of his life in Winnipeg and graduated from Kelvin High School. He volunteered and proudly served for four years in the Second World War as a captain of the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders of Canada serving in France. When Cliff returned from the war, he completed his training as an accountant for his career until he became a business owner and partner in Norwood Tent and Awning. While growing up, Cliff loved family holidays at Long Pine Lake, Ingolf, Ontario which he later shared with his own children. With Marie, Cliff continued to enjoy their lake community life with good friends at Hockey Haven, Ontario. Their ongoing support and love, along with the very skilled and caring staff at Kenora's Lakehead Hospital, have helped immensely at this very sad time. Since retiring 20 years ago Cliff has enjoyed his family, volunteer driving, friends and much travel with Marie whom he married in 2009 at Westworth United Church. He and Marie resided in Winnipeg and enjoyed a loving relationship together. Laughter, mirth and watching "The Wheelie" were their hallmark. Cliff renewed his driver's license by passing his first written and performance test in June at the age of 92. The only comment by the tester was "you are a little slow". Cliff was a joy to his family and he loved all of them. His life was enhanced by his grandchildren who would enjoy a back and forth teasing relationship with him and bring much laughter into Cliff's life, as he did to theirs. He was a wonderful story teller; stories built on extensive, usually accurate detail and colour. Cliff truly loved people, was interested in their lives and remembered what was going on for them. His enduring, beaming smile was directed to everyone and will be sorely missed. In lieu of flowers, please donate by cheque, in memory of Cliff to The Royal Canadian Legion, Dominion Command, 86 Aird Place, Kanata, ON K2L 0A1. (Please note as memo on the cheque "Poppy Fund - Cliff Fryers"). A Funeral to celebrate Cliff's life will be held on Tuesday, August 5, at 2:00 p.m. in Westworth United Church, 1750 Grosvenor Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba. Wojcik's Funeral Chapel & Crematorium, 2157 Portage Avenue, 204.897.4665, in care of arrangements. wojciksfuneralchapel.com "Rest in peace Cliff; life well lived; job well done."

Pat, Nancy, Don, Bob and Marie, I am very sad to hear of Cliff's passing. And I feel how deep your loss is. When I was with Cliff and dad, it made me wish I had a brother just like Cliff. He made dad come alive; with thought and laughter! Cliff was a truly great people person; as you all evidence. Love, John - Posted by: John Fryers (nephew) on: Aug 11, 2014

I have many memories of meeting Nancy, and coming and going from her house on Lyndsay street in the 1970's. Mr Fryers was always there to say hello and ask how things were going....and hardly ever asked what we were up to! I had an opportunity to see him again not long ago. A lovely gentleman, he will be missed. - Posted by: Nancy Edge McKinnon (Friend of Nancy Fryers) on: Aug 05, 2014

On behalf of the Burton family- Jon, Barbara and I, we wish to express our condolences to the Fryers family- Pat, Don, Nancy, Bob and families. We are thinking about you at this sad time but know you must be grateful for the long, active life your dad lived. A few years ago Cliff and Kay Hermiston came to visit us and Mum in Brandon and I remember how much we all enjoyed seeing them and visiting with them at that time. I remember especially Cliff's wonderful sense of humour. We lost Mum in January of this year so I know something of what you're going through. Even though she lived a long, healthy life, we miss her very much and think about her often. We'll be thinking of you all on Tuesday. Sincerely, Kathryn - Posted by: Kathryn Knight (Burton) (distant cousin) on: Aug 04, 2014

I was privileged, along with my daughter Christine and my grandson Nathan, to attend Cliff and Marie's wedding, truly a joyful celebration. My thoughts and prayers go out to Marie and to the rest of the family at this sad time. - Posted by: Theresa Burke (Marie's sister-in-law) on: Aug 04, 2014

I remember Cliff and I driving across the ice to the Long Pine Lake cottage for Christmas family vacation. It was a bitterly cold winter and I assumed the ice was thick enough but I kept the windows open and Cliff commented, "Why do you want the windows down?" I did not want to share my fear of going through the ice but assured him with my comment about fresh air is good for you. I am sure he was puzzled at that but happily let me drive with the fresh air. Little did he know my plan if we go through the ice we are going out the windows fast. I have more loving memories of Cliff with his stories, laughter and his hugs but this is one I wanted to share. My uncle Cliff was kind and always willing to help. I recall a bitterly cold Christmas Eve when our family car had a flat tire near midnight. We had no spare and no jack, but up drove Cliff to our rescue with a selection of both, to save the day! We asked him to come back and warm up before the fire........ He said, " yes", and drove home! He was a true friend to my Dad. Uncle Cliff will be missed by all my family. - Posted by: Craig Mackie (Nephew) on: Aug 02, 2014

I worked for Mr. Fryers about 40 years ago at Norwood Tent and Awning. He was professional and respectful and made my first job experience an enjoyable one. I feel honored to have known him. Rest in peace. - Posted by: Darlene Bonney (Former employee) on: Jul 30, 2014
