BEVERLEY JOAN FOX-DECENT, R.N. (neé SPEED) Beverley Joan Fox-Decent (neé Speed), R.N., 77, passed away peacefully in her home in Montreal on the morning of August 9, 2014. She passed with Wally Fox-Decent, her husband of 52 years, and Charito Malingan, her long-time care-giver, by her side. She was born in Winnipeg to the late David and Florence Speed, October 28, 1936. Joan graduated as a Registered Nurse from the University of Winnipeg in 1962. She married Wally that same year, and they lived together in Winnipeg for 47 years before moving to Montreal in 2009. She spent parts of every summer, save this one, at the family cottage at West Hawk Lake. Joan eventually became a Head Nurse in Urology at the Health Sciences Centre, but gave up her career in 1967 to raise her sons Evan and Chris. She gave selflessly to her family. She delighted in reading Evan and Chris bedtime stories, and later taking them to swimming lessons, piano instruction, cello lessons, French tutoring, ski trips, water-skiing, horseback riding lessons, and so much more. When her sister Hazel Buchanan became afflicted with Alzheimer's Disease late in life, Joan spent those years caring for her on an almost daily basis. Two of Joan's many passions were spending summers with the family at the cottage at West Hawk Lake and celebrating Christmas. Every Christmas morning for some 40 years, a generous sitting room at the family home on Roblin Boulevard would be filled beyond capacity with Santa's tidings. The family would spend all day opening the gifts Joan had spent the past year collecting and wrapping. Christmas dinner was always like no other. The family would often joke that Joan's Christmas preparations began on Boxing Day. She was the kind of person who would give you the shirt off her back before you realized it might benefit you, and without letting you know she had done so. In the last years of her life, Joan suffered from the same debilitating disease that took her sister, Alzheimer's. The family would like to thank the many friends and professionals who went far beyond the call of duty during this challenging time: her care-givers Charito Malingan, Annabelle Banquillo and Carlos Gonzalez; Dr. Brian White-Guay, her family physician; Dr. Serge Gauthier, her geriatrician from the McGill Centre for Studies in Aging; Valerie Therrien, her nurse from Quebec's home care; and Pierre Roy and Sylvain Lemieux, auxiliaries from Quebec's home care. Joan is survived by her husband Wally, her son Evan and his partner Adriana, her son Chris and his wife Bobbi-Jo, and her three grandchildren: Emma-Rae, Brenlee, and Maya. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, those who wish may make a donation to the Alzheimer Society of Canada. A memorial service will be held in Winnipeg in the coming weeks. May the soul of this righteous one through the mercy of God rest in peace. Farewell beloved wife, mother and grandmother.
