HATTIE MAY MCCLELLAND (nee HAMMOND) August 6, 1919 - September 6, 2014. Peacefully, shortly after a brief illness, she slipped away to be reunited with her second son William Dale, her father Robert Hammond, her mother Maggie May Hammond (nee McNeelands), her five sisters, Nellie, Margaret, Florence, Avice, Eva, and two brothers Jogn and Forrest. She is survived by her husband of 65 years, William Ross, her sons Douglas Earl (and his spouse Anthony Tucker), and Wayne Robert; as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family, with whom she kept in close contact. Our gratitude to the kind staff of floor E5 of St. Boniface Hospital, whose kindness and efforts were greatly appreciated. Hattie was born in Rochdale, Manitoba, and attended school there. She worked on her Uncle Ed's farm as a girl. At the beginning of the Second World War she moved to Winnipeg to work at the McDonald Aircraft factory. In 1946 she began to work at the Crescent Creamery plant where she made many friends. The first time she applied there they refused to hire her because she was too short, so she went back the following week in her high heels and passed the the test, an example of the determined way she lived her life overcoming every obstacle that came her way. At a social for Creamery staff she met a young man named Ross McClelland. After an evening dancing, he asked if they could meet at the next dance, and she agreed. When she arrived at the following dance he was waiting by the door for her, and the rest is history. They struck up a dancing partnership for life. Hattie and Ross were married on October 8, 1949 at Chalmers United Church, in Winnipeg. Hattie and Ross had three sons, Douglas Earl born May 18, 1954, William Dale born July 8, 1955 and Wayne Robert born March 22, 1958. William Dale passed away at birth. Hattie and Ross bought their fist house in St. Vital in 1953, and in then in 1957 moved to a brand new home in Windsor Park on De Bourmont Bay. This was a great idea. They were the second family to move on to the Bay. As new families moved in to the Bay Hattie and Ross welcomed them, and as time went on life long friendships developed with their new neighbours. This was a wonderful community of friends. As time passed they stayed close friends, even as some eventually moved to other areas. One could only aspire to lead a life as full of love and pleasure, as Hattie's has been. She was a great beauty, and an athlete, in her youth, and then a doting mother and a loving wife. Her greatest joy was her 65 years of partnership with Ross, a large portion of which was spent dancing at every opportunity. Rest In Peace. Viewing will be held Friday, September 12 at 9:00 a.m. followed by the service at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave.

  • I'm truly sorry for your great loss Curly. Of the times I was a visitor to your home, Hattie was the antithesis of the perfect welcoming hostess. She will be ever missed by all that had the good fortune to have the pleasure of her company. May she rest in God's arms as she richly deserves.
