LYDIA SHIRLEY WATSON (nee KRIZAK) Peacefully, on September 15, 2014 at Grace Hospital after a long and courageous battle with cancer. And with her family by her side, beloved mother, sister, auntie and grandma, Lydia Watson, aged 76. Left to cherish her memories are her dearly loved children, Kim (Ian Fleetwood, with grandchildren Matthew and Lauren) of Victoria, BC, Chris (Jennifer Jones, with grandsons Matthew, Andrew and Nathan) of Hinton, AB, Patrick (grandchildren Mary, Alyssa and Sterling with mother Lauri-Anne Watson) and Bryan of Winnipeg, sisters Jolana (Jerry Dusik), Anne (Augustine), Mary (Betker), Josie (Cole), and Jenny (Krizak), brother Joseph (Krizak) as well as many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased in 2000 by her husband, Al Watson. Born on May 29, 1938 in Rosewood, MB, Lydia spent her childhood on a family farm near Dufresne. She was the fourth child but first Canadian born into a wonderfully close family. Her parents and siblings, Joseph, Jolana and Anne had recently immigrated to Canada from Czechoslovakia. There were many entertaining stories of early life on a rural farm. She attended Arondale Elementary school and then high school in Lorette. Following high school graduation, she continued to pursue a career path in education and attended the Manitoba Teachers College. Here she received her teaching certificate. Her teaching career began in Hazelridge and after two years, she moved north to Flin Flon. This is where she met her future husband, also a teacher, Al Watson. They were married in 1965. Eventually, the couple moved to the St. James area of Winnipeg where they established a home and started a family. While raising her children, Lydia succeeded in graduating from the University of Winnipeg in 1985, with a Bachelor of Education. She loved children and taught at the elementary level. Despite her "retirement", she continued to work at Sigfusson Nursery School at Athlone School. She had a special place in her heart for children. Family and friends were most important to Lydia, and she always made them feel so welcome. She filled our life with reunions and family dinners, vacations and celebrations. Our cousins became like siblings and friends like Aunties and Uncles. Her grandchildren were the light of her life. She always loved to hear of their adventures and plans. She loved to travel and enjoyed several trips including coast to coast across Canada and the US and overseas to Russia and Ireland. Whether it was salmon fishing on the Pacific Coast, the tea cup ride at Disney or gambling down in Mahnomen, Mom was keen! Lydia loved being a hockey/soccer Mom. She was more recently a huge fan of her beloved teams, the Bombers and Jets. She was always a devoted and loving wife. Her care, love and empathy for Dad during his prolonged illness was courageous and admirable. Her strong faith and love of God helped her endure all that was challenging in her life. Lydia was an active member of St. John XXIII parish and the CWL. While she was still able, she loved attending daily Mass. She participated in programs held at her church and volunteered in many activities in the parish. Funeral mass will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday, September 18, 2014 at St. John XXIII Roman Catholic Church (3390 Portage Avenue) with Father Gloscheski officiating. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to CancerCare Manitoba or to St. John XXIII Roman Catholic Church. Sincere thanks and appreciation is extended to the staff of Grace Hospital Cancer Care, the Palliative Care Program, the Manitoba Home Care Program, Dr Giundi and VON who helped Lydia with her journey with cancer. Special thanks to Dr George and the wonderful staff of 3 South at Grace Hospital for the skilled and compassionate care Lydia received. Mom, God has picked you up in his arms and taken you home. May you find eternal happiness. You are in our hearts forever. Love you. www.chapellawn.ca 885-9715

  • Sincere condolences to all of Lydia's family. She will be missed. I have known Lydia over many years. I fondly remember the caravan of families that journeyed to Disney World in California. We all were young then and it was a great experience and great fun! How Anne [her sister] and I teased her about her score of 15 on hole number 17 at Fantasy Lake Golf Course. Our golfing obviously was not the best but great to visit at lunch afterwards! We were making happy memories to treasure in future years. With sympathy, Shirley Augustine - Posted by: Shirley Augustine (Family friend.) on: Sep 17, 2014

  • Auntie Lydia was such a wonderful woman. She cared for all of us, and spoiled us with wonderful family-filled gatherings and one on one visits.... I will miss her so very much. She took care of my cat (years ago) when I traveled, watched my daughter when I needed a sitter and kept my mom busy after she moved to St James. She was such a big part of our lives and we loved her so much!! - Posted by: Sherry Rasmussen (Niece) on: Sep 17, 2014
