EILEEN SMITH Dorothy Eileen Smith (nee Hockley) entered eternal life in the early morning hours of Wednesday, September 17, 2014. Her spirit is being carried on by her two surviving daughters Pam and Linda, her six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren whose photos she proudly displayed on walls and every available shelf wherever she lived. She was born 92 years ago in Indian Head, SK, to parents Ada and John. Eileen's love of nature and outdoors was perhaps shaped through her father's position as Indian Agent for the beautiful Qu'Appelle Valley District, where Eileen grew up before getting married and moving to the St. James/Silver Heights area of Winnipeg, MB. To the dozens of young people who hung out at her daughter Pam's and son-in-law Reg's home on Sturgeon Road and to the in-laws, nieces, nephews, friends and family too numerous to list but not forgotten, she was simply known as 'Granny' to many. Yet, during her life well lived, she was also known as Madame President to the Manitoba Society of Seniors; she was Sister Eileen Smith to members of The Order of the Eastern Star, she was a best friend and leader to the participants of the Footloose and Fancy Free Mall Walkers. But perhaps she was best known in private life as the 'tough but fair' Sergeant Shultz, better known as the Supervisor, Grain Imports and Exports at the Canadian Wheat Board. An often heard story was her trip on the Great Lakes aboard a grain ship with her good friend and travel companion, Janice Badison. Eileen loved to travel whenever she could. Her trips to Italy, Australia, New Zealand, England, Hawaii, Fiji, The Caribbean, Arizona, Pennsylvania and from coast to coast in Canada, made for many stories she enjoyed telling and retelling. An avid reader, a formidable player of Trivial Pursuit and her obsession of cross-word puzzles gave her a sharp wit and great sense of humour, enjoyed by all around her. Mother, matriarch and dispenser of wisdom, she has left a large hole in our family. Eileen is reunited with her son Terry and elder sister Wilda. The family would like to specifically thank Eileen's niece Marion McCutcheon, for all her care, friendship, and guidance in our mother's later years.

Condolences & Memories (4 entries)

  • Linda, Jack and families, I had the pleasure of meeting Eileen, while she visited Linda at Montreal, and remember her as a smart and dear lady. What an impressive list of accomplishments she achieved during her life, I am sure this will leave so many nice memories to their families and friends, throughout the years. Please, receive my respects on her passing. My thoughts and love are with Linda, my dear friend. - Posted by: Claudia Soto ((Linda's friend)) on: Nov 23, 2014

  • So sorry to hear of your Mom's passing. I have many fond memories of time spent at your house, growing up. You must be very proud of all that your Mom accomplished. She was an important part of all your lives and will be greatly missed. Even though we cannot keep our loved ones with us forever, their loss causes such great sadness. • Pam and Linda and families, I was saddened to hear of your Mom's passing. I have fond memories of her, helping to host my bridal shower in her home, with her fancy tea cups and lace tablecloths. She taught me sewing classes and recently (well into her 80's) was a member of the same gym as I. She will be missed, I'm sure, by more than just your families. - Posted by: Wendy Watson (Friend) on: Oct 03, 2014

  • It is with sadness and yet so many fond memories that I leave this tribute for my dear Auntie Eileen. She was always so pleasant and quick with a smile and a laugh when I had the pleasure of being with her as a young boy. Eileen had a special gift of treating all that she knew, young and old, with an equal respect and kindness and I used to love to hear her talk and tell stories. Her passing does represent the end of an era for me and I will always remember her with love. My condolences to Pam, Reg, Kari and Scott and to Linda and Jack and my thoughts are with you all and with Eileen as she reunites with Terry and Wilda. God bless my "favourite" Auntie Eileen! - Posted by: Dave Staples (Nephew) on: Sep 28, 2014
