GLADYS SCHMIDT (nee HESCHEL) January 8, 1928 - March 9, 2015 It is with deep sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the peaceful passing of our beloved wife, mother, and grandmother on Monday, March 9, 2015. On January 8, 1928 Gladys was born in Hodgeville, SK. She graduated from nursing in 1950, and made her way to Neudorf, SK where she met the love of her life Gordon Schmidt at a dance at the Neudorf Hall. Love prevailed and they got married in Winnipeg at the Lutheran Church of the Cross. On October 14, 2014 Gladys and Gordon celebrated their 62nd anniversary. Gladys worked as a nurse for over 50 years. She worked as a head nurse at the Misericordia Hospital for three years, then continuing on as the head nurse at Westbrook Medical Centre. She then took a short break to raise her family. Gladys worked until her retirement at age 70. She was well respected by all of her colleagues, doctors, fellow nurses, and other professionals. She was an amazing cook and baker. Gladys loved to entertain and enjoyed many successful dinner parties. She loved playing cards with family and friends. She had a passion for gardening and mastered the skillful art of petit pointe. Many of Gladys' petit pointe creations are still displayed in her home. • Dear Gordon and family. Our deepest sympathies to all of you. We were good friends from Machray Ave and our dads worked together at Bristol Aerospace. I still remember babysitting all of you KIm, Murray and David. My mom used to look after Kim when your parents were working. You have amazing parents and they will always be a memory for us. • Dear Uncle Gordon, Kim, Murray, & Dave. I am so sorry to hear the news of Aunty Gladys. I will always remember of her that she had such a kindness and warmth about her. I was lucky to have received many knitted outfits when I was a kid - it was always a treat to see what would come for my birthday. I still have a knitted afghan (Pink, Purple, & White) that she made for me. Though it has been a while since having seen her I will miss her a lot. Having memories is not like having her here but those memories will be treasured. I hope you are able to find some comfort in knowing how much she was loved. Karen. - Posted by: Karen Chan (Niece ) on: Mar 13, 2015

  • Our sincere sympathy to Uncle Gordon, Kim, Murray, Dave and all the Schmidt family. I (Kelly) will never forget her warm smile and laughter. May God keep you and give you peace. - Posted by: Kelly and Cathy Weger (Nephew) on: Mar 13, 2015

  • Gladys was my favorite sister, my best friend and my mother. Growing up on the farm, she did so much hard work and never scolded me. I'll miss her so much. - Posted by: Briget Carter (Sister) on: Mar 12, 2015

  • Aunt Gladys visited me several times in New York and once after I moved to Florida. She was a great host whenever my family and I visited Winnipeg. One of my oldest memories of her was of her making pierogies for me when she visited NYC when I was a kid. I had never eaten them before and really loved them. Before her visit ended she made lots of them and we put them in the freezer for later eating. I made my mother learn her recipe. My mother is her younger sister; mom said that Gladys looked out for her when my mother was in Nursing School in Winnipeg. We miss her. - Posted by: Hayden Burrus (Nephew) on: Mar 12, 2015

  • Sorry for your loss, Murray. This is never easy to deal with, but take strength from the memories your mother left you. May they all bring a smile to your face. Our deepest sympathies go out to you. - Posted by: Betty & Peter Cimarno (Friends of Murray) on: Mar 12, 2015

  • Aunty Gladys was important to our family - she always supported my dad, Garry, and his other daughter Julie. She & Uncle Gordon came to my wedding and would meet me at the airport for coffee if I was flying through. We'll really miss her. - Posted by: Lisa-Marie Heschel (Niece) on: Mar 11, 2015
