THE HONOURABLE JOHN AMBROSE SCOLLIN Q.C, L.L.B. It is with the deepest sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He died peacefully, at the age of 87, in the company of his loving wife, on Saturday, March 21, 2015. John will be remembered forever by his wife of 64 years of marriage, Rita (nee McGregor), son John, daughter Lorraine, granddaughter Caitlin and grandson Sean, great-grandson, Cairo, as well as many dear friends and colleagues. On October 6, 1927 John was born in Edinburgh, Scotland. He attended the University of Edinburgh, winning the Vans Dunlop Scholarship and graduating with honours. John and Rita were married in 1950. After a short service as legal counsel with the British Army he served as a Magistrate in Tanzania for three years. John and Rita came to Canada in 1953, to Winnipeg, where John was a prosecutor for the City of Winnipeg and later a partner with the law firm Pitblado Hoskins. John moved with his family to Ottawa in 1966 and John became the Assistant Deputy Attorney General for the Federal Department of Justice. He was a member of the Bar and practiced in six Canadian provinces, often appearing in the Supreme Court of Canada. In 1981 he was appointed to the Queen's Bench of Manitoba and served as a Judge until his retirement in 1999. John's friends and colleagues knew him as fiercely loyal and exceptionally hard working. He saw the irony and humour in all things and never feared to speak his mind. His love of the law was second only to his love for his family, who treasured him for the tremendously sentimental and generous spirit he always was. Funeral Mass will be Celebrated on Thursday, March 26, 2015 at 1:00 p.m., in St. John Brebeuf Roman Catholic Church, 1707 John Brebeuf Place, with Rev. Fr. Mark Tarrant and Rev. Msgr. Ward Jamieson, presiding. The family would like to thank the nurses and doctors on the third floor of the Grace Hospital (especially Karen) for their respectful and sensitive care, and all the staff of the Court of Queen's Bench in Winnipeg for their friendship and courtesy over many years. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Wojcik's Funeral Chapel, 2157 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, MB in care of arrangements 204-897-4665. Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Douglas and I were saddened to hear of John's passing. We think back to the many occasions when John entertained us with his profound sense of knowledge when discussing Scottish history. Very few people will ever be able to claim a sense of humor such as John possessed. We hope that you are well and I am sure that you are surrounded with the love and support of your family. - Posted by: douglas and verna ross (friends) on: Apr 02, 2015

  • So sorry to learn of John's passing. I will always remember his quiet humour, rapier sharp intellect and genuine kind-heartedness. He was a true gentleman. With deep sympathy to the entire family. Mark - Posted by: Mark Matheson () on: Mar 25, 2015

  • Dear Mrs. Scollin, I was so saddened to hear of John's passing. Earlier in my career, John and I appeared in the Supreme Court of Canada together on an important constitutional case. He was a fierce litigator, yet charming at the same time. I subsequently succeeded him as Asst. Deputy Attorney General, and found that the shoes I was expected to fill were huge. In that capacity, I invited him to come to speak to the Crown Attorneys at their annual professional development conference in Banff. The topic he chose was a curious one: "The Importance of Words". He took a seemingly dry topic, and had everyone in stitches throughout. He was amusing, engaging yet he had a serious message: in your advocacy, be clear, concise and make each word count. I will miss him greatly. Kindest regards, Bruce MacFarlane. - Posted by: Bruce MacFarlane (Former colleague) on: Mar 24, 2015
