ELSIE LILLIAN SMART (nee HAYCOCK) January 28, 1934 - April 10, 2015 After a brief illness, and with her family by her side, it is with heartfelt sadness that our family announces the sudden passing of Elsie Smart on Friday, April 10, 2015 at the Grace Hospital. Elsie will be dearly missed by her loving husband, Donald William Smart, of 60 years of marriage; children, Wendy (Mark) of Devon, AB, Donald Jr. (special friend Lori), Maria (daughter-in-law), and Jody (Brent) of Winnipeg. Left to cherish Nanny's memories will be her eight grandchildren, Hilary, Tanya, Donna, Brandon, Michael, Paige, Meghan and Haylee as well as nine great-grandchildren. She also leaves behind to mourn, her two sisters, Hazel and Rita (Boyd); extended family; many special friends; and her dearest friend Mel Pageot of 37 years. Elsie was predeceased by her parents, Roy and Elsie Haycock; brothers, Cliff and Roy; and sisters, Mary and Hilda. On January 18, 1934, Elsie was born on the family farm in Inwood, Manitoba. In 1948 the family moved to Winnipeg. Shortly after, the Haycock family moved once again but this time to Dominion City where Elsie would meet her future husband. Elsie and Don were married on December 11, 1954 at the Young United Church in Winnipeg. After 28 years with the Federal Government of Canada, Elsie retired from the Department of National Defense as the Base Winnipeg Chief Switchboard Supervisor. She led a very active life right up until her final days. Elsie travelled extensively throughout Canada and Europe during Don's military career. She was an avid curler, baseball player and lover of animals. Her competitive nature was seen on and off the ice and in later years, Elsie became a competitive spectator as she watched her children and grandchildren compete in the sports they enjoyed. Some of her favourite pastimes comprised of maintaining an immaculate yard, planting flowers, betting on the ponies (especially the grey ones), playing the guitar, and spending time with the love of her life, her family. A celebration of Mom's life will be held on Sunday, April 19, 2015 at 3:00 p.m. in Westwood Community Church, 401 Westwood Drive, Winnipeg, MB. Honorary pallbearers will be Mel Pageot, Art King, Del St. James, Lois Spence, Pat McDonald, and Shannon Wentz. If friends so desire, donations in memory of Elsie may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Avenue, Winnipeg, MB R3C 2B7 or The Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, Winnipeg, MB R3T 0R3. • Hi Don I am so sorry to hear of the passing of your dear wife. I do hope you remember who I am, we were good friends back in the Dominion City days. I lost my beloved partner Clarence in 2013 so I know how these times will be very hard to accept. Do take care - Posted by: Betty Weiss () on: Apr 17, 2015

  • Dear Don, Wendy, Donnie and Jody My Love, Thoughts and Prayers go out to All Of You! Elsie was a very special friend and we had soo many fun times together, sometimes just Elsie and I, and sometimes with both the Dutchin and Smart families...I have so very many fond memories of Elsie, like the times we used to curl together and the cursing going on the Ice when someone missed a shot, the Bonspiel in Dominion City and staying in the Luxurious Dominion City Hotel! Wow, when we were in our Hotel Room, I told Elsie it reminded me of the Vilna Hotel in my small town in Alberta, no shower, a Toilet and Sink down the Hall and leaking rads. I felt right at home, so after a couple of drinks, it became a Resort for Us! I will always remember Elsie's laugh, My God it was soo contagious. I will also remember her quick Wit and one liners that used to crack everyone up. The best line that Elsie ever used was when we were all sitting together at the Westwin Curling Club and someone in the Military that I knew would join our Table that Elsie had never met, so of course very Social friendly Elsie would introduce herself with this big, bright smile on her face and say "Hi My name is Elsie Smart, pleased to meet you", she shook their hand and said "I would like to introduce You to my husband Donnie Dumb". It sometimes would take a couple of minutes for the introduction to sink in and when it did, everyone busted a gut laughing! Just how Special was Elsie, well let me tell You, she helped me make Peanut Butter and Chocolate Chip Cookies for a Fund Raiser at Stephanie's School, we made 12dozen and looked like cookies after they were done, she took Stephy shopping along with Jody just after Bradley was born because Stephy wanted to buy him a present, Stephy only had $2.00 from her allowance and Elsie told Stephy to pick what she wanted, and with the extra $5.00 Elsie paid, Stephy got Brad two really nice velour sleepers. How Thankful and Happy was Stephanie. Making all the Salads for the BBQ at the Dutchin's on Moorgate, Elsie made them all! Just some of the Wonderful Memories that I have of Elsie. I will always remember Elsie and cherish our Friendship, as I know that Your Family will always keep her close to Your Hearts. Elsie always had a strong Spirit and she will be watching over her Family and Friends! Love Geri - Posted by: Geri Dutchin (Dear Friend) on: Apr 17, 2015

  • Don, my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Elsie was good people. She helped a lot of people stay in touch with family and friends through the telephones she controlled.
